I'm in need of more storage space.. and know that eventually, any amount of cards that I buy will not be enough (ie: when I go on vacation). So, I'm considering purchasing a portable storage device. I've searched through the forums and am considering the Flashtrax or Archos Gmini models.
However, I shoot in RAW and these players will not display this. I currently have the embedded jpeg saved to small and rough, but am wondering what level of quality might be useful in order to allow for a decent quality preview on these players' screens. Since the resolution is lower than our computer screens, I'm figuring that large/fine is not necessary.
Also - for anyone that currently has a storage device with LCD - do you find it very useful to look at your photos afterwards? I delete a few photos on location, but generally wait until I get back to the computer before really narrowing it down.
edit to add: The Epson P-2000 is way out of my price range.

FlashTrax may be an option for you. I've talked to a number of photogs who use it and love it.

doh! I didn't realize that the Flashtrax displayed CRW files! Does this apply to all models of Flashtrax?

Just had my PSD delivered...
Nexto CF ND-2500 Fastest on the market but doesn't come with a screen ( although I am going to get a USB Host CF Card to enable me to view them on my PDA whilst on location. i.e. all goodies that will fit in my camera bag )
Heres a link to it:
SavitMicro
Speed database of these units...
fhoude PSD Speed database
I am very impressed with the unit so far and with the write speeds it exceeds all the others which is what I want over being able to veiw the images...
Only downside is that there is only 2 suppliers at present 1)The Manufacturer & 2) www.shuk.de in Germany
Hope this helps

I use a Palm LifeDrive, works well (although only 4gb), and is impressive when showing off pics :)
I'm sure that a dedicated unit would perform better but this works for me
edit: no RAW support but the basic JPEG images look great

well you could get an ipod. i heard they only make them with a color display from now on and they sank the prices about 100 buck on each model. And you could also have some nice music with you.
except i dont think it shows raw images

Thanks for the input guys - I think I'm leaning more towards an Archos Gmini or a Flashtrax at the moment.. but have decided to hold out until vacation comes (or at least when I expect to need more than 80ish shots before I can get back to a computer).
I read somewhere recently that the iPods let you upload and view (supposing it's jpeg) - but only in a low-res quality? Then you have to upload them to the computer and re-download them to view them in better quality, which seems to sort of ruin the point.
The P2000 looks great, but is a bit expensive for me. I may lean towards one of the Gminis without a screen, as they are much cheaper than anything with a screen.

I don't review my images on little screens, so I saved money
by getting an x drive. |

Ditto, I got the 80GB model, love it. Don't plan on judging the quality of the photos on the LCD screen though, it sucks in this respect. |

I have the 40gb and the screen is crap and never use it. In retrospect I would've gotten one without the screen for a lot cheaper.

I have the flashtrax. Love it. Fits in a slot in my camera backpack, enables me to go all day without running out of room on cards, can look at photos while bored (train, subway, airplane) including zoom in, can hook it to a TV for a slideshow when visiting relatives/friends, displays RAW.
Used it twice for long weekend photo trips and five times on a long day trip. Didn't have to lug my laptop around...
Worth every penny.
