Please note the results of "Free Study VIII" (Challenge 322) have been recalculated due to a disqualification. The entry previously ranked in 278th place was entered in two challenges and was disqualified from this challenge (the one in which it was entered second).

I'm surprised it wasn't DQd from both...

For past violations of this rule, we have disqualified only the later entry, so that's what we did in this case.

does that mean present and future violations will result in multiple dq's?

No -- or at least there is no discussion of whether to change our enforcement policy on this. If a user violated this rule repeatedly we may handle it differently in that case.

Violations of this rule are very rare, and in almost all cases result from a user not seeing this particular line in the Challenge Rules. In my opinion, at least, two disqualifications for what is almost certainly an honest mistake seems excessive.

MOST DQs result from an honest mistake and an honest misinterpretation of the rules/ oversight of some aspect of the rules, or so it seems to me.

I'm curious why this case should be any different?

Because this mistake would result in an automatic suspension for users making that mistake. That seems pretty extreme.

We DQ the second of the two entries when we find this type of issue. In this case, Free Study was the second submission based on image ID. Contrary to popular opinion, we don't actually like DQing and suspending people. So we try to err on the side of caution and moderation. :)

It's not any different. Most Challenge Rule violations result in one disqualification, not two, for a single violation.

Look at this another way:

At the time the first photograph was entered, no violation had taken place. The entry of the second photograph created the violation, and that second photograph was removed to resolve the violation.

Terry, your answer makes sense, thanks.

Most challenge rule violations only affect one challenge not two, so there is still a difference but... your answer makes most sense to me.

Oh and Clara, actually I don't think most people are of the opinion that SC enjoy DQing entries. Questioning the basis for individual DQ decisions is not tantamount to that opinion.
