What is a good price for a used 300D (body only) with roughtly 8000 shots thru it? I am finding a wide range of final ebay auction prices and am wondering what the border of good deal / ripoff is.
Also, what is a good starter lens? I would like something that I could use for a lot of different situations until I can afford to buy more lenses. I would be transitioning from my current camera and would like something with a 10x zoom. What does everyone suggest? I don't have a lot of money to spend on it, maybe $200 at the most.
Thanks,

I wouldn't buy one used for more than $500 w/ kit lens.....only because you can get the Rebel XT for around $800-$1000

My 300d was in excellent condition, 6 months old, 1500 shots, and I sold it with the lens for $550 shipped.

I sold my quite not mint rebel with 12,500 shots no lens, but all other accessories and a spare battery for $450 shipped with paypal fees included.

Okay, thanks for the advice...turns out this might not be such a good deal after all.
As far as getting a lens, what do you suggest to start out with? I can only afford one right now so it needs to be versitle. I would also like roughly the same amount of zoom that I have in my current p&s, 10x. Does this translate into a 300mm lens? |

I'm not sure what you mean, do you want a lens with 10x zoom over it's focal length or do you want a lens that seems about as long as the one you're using? 10x zooms are expensive!!! The cheapest ones I know of are the 18-200 tamron and then the not quite so versatile 28-200 canon.

Haha, I don't know what I mean either. This whole dSLR thing is confusing....
I want a lens that seems about as long as the one on my S5100. Isn't there a Sigma kit lens that is like 70-300 or something? Would that be what i'm looking for?
I also found someone selling a 10D body only for $650+shipping. This seems like a good deal, agreed? |

You'll be happy with something like a 70-300mm lens to start (along with your kit lens something around 18-55). It is probably pretty close to what you're looking for, but p&s zoom is different than lens attachments. I say this in accordance to your budget.

I don't think you'll be happy with a 70-300 as your only lens. 300 is certainly a decent zoom - but 70 certainly rather far zoomed in for a good # of shots. What type of shots do you usually take?

A mixture of pretty much everything (landscapes/city scapes, stuff just for challenges here, friends/family, ect). The camera I got from ebay (FM member) comes with the kit 18-55mm lens. I just want something that can zoom in pretty far. |

I'm selling a 100-300 sigma lens, if you're interested... I've been trying to get about $75 shipped including paypal.

I just sold my Rebel 300D body on the weekend, for $600 Can funds. I went and got the XT and I am very happy so far. I have the kit lens, 50 mm 1.8 and a Sigma 28 - 300 which I use pretty much all the time. The 28 is good enough for upclose, but the 300 zoom comes in handy when out trying to get animal shots in the wilds. I am even thinking of trying a 2 x converter to bring up to 600 mm, but I don't know if I will loose too much in clarity |

How do converters work? Does it effect clarity a lot? What is the point and shoot conversion for a 600mm lens? Above 10x? |

Also, what is the cost of a lens setup to do extreme macro (where the hairs on bugs are visible, ect)? That would be awesome... |

Jordan,
10x means just 10 times whatever the base focal length of the lens is. Like if the lens starts at 28mm, 10x is 280mm.
For the bug pictures, you need to get a macro lens with as close to a 1:1 magnification as you can get. I have a Tamron 70-300 lens with a 1:2 macro on the way, that was pretty affordable and should make for some very closeup macro pictures.

the extreme macro shots of like dragon fly's faces (like the one which ribboned in the latest macro challenge) was done by a dedicated macro lens (around 400-450) and a 50mm (around 70$) and a coupler (5 dollars or so). the 50mm lens is reversed and coupled onto the dedicated macro (sigma 105mm f/2.8 was the lens i think that was used that will run you around 400 i think for the EX version or you could get the canon 100mm f/2.8 macro which is also very sharp at around 450). so that'll total you to around 470-520 probably for that extreme macro setup. you might think this is expensive but really this is the cheap setup, the more expensive route to extreme macro is the canon mp-e 60mm 1-5x which runs around 700-800$. this lens starts at 1:1 magnification and goes all the way up to 5:1. but that's probably a little too extreme and plus you'll need special lights like the macro ring light (expensive, not sure how much though...i think it's over 300$) to get enough light at such high magnification.
wait how much do you have for a lens? if you have like 230$ US i would go for the canon 28-105 II USM. pretty good and it'll probably have the right focal length for most of your shots. of course, it probably can't go as long as your fuji s5100 but getting a 10x in a single lens is not very practical. the canon 28-300mm L lens is over 2000$ new. and sadly, if you go cheaper with some sigmas or tamrons, the image quality might be worse than just using your s5100. to get 10x worth of focal length, you'll need a few lenses. :( im in the same dilemna.
