On and off for several months I've searched for an online discussion board for photographers in the Finger Lakes region of NY and was unsuccessful. After thinking it over for awhile I decided to start my own. While some topics are similar to DPC we want to focus on local opportunities, stores, outings, news... I'm hoping it will help people get together and share their hobby. It took me awhile to even find a camera club around here.

Anyway, I hope you locals (or anyone near the Finger Lakes region) will at least take a look. Here's the link:

Thanks!

Just wanted to say thank you!! I think this is a great idea. I can't wait to talk with some other photographers in our area.

And we're already planning two outings, so if you're anywhere nearby, please check it out.

Hey! Thank you all for signing up. I hope it works out. So far it seems to be going well.

I'm down near Watkins Glen.

:) It's a good idea. I tried to join Neil Cowley's WNY forum, but he decided to shut it down.

Thanks, Matt. I appreciate that. I've never heard of Neil Cowley or his site...? I searched on and off for about a year and could never find anything. I'm just looking to get a nice group together and be able to have frequent local meets with like-minded people. :-) It should be fun.

I'm in Ithaca. I got married in Canandaigua, though. It's a beautiful town.

it won't let me register. Keeps saying "The confirmation code you entered was incorrect" even though I can see it perfectly and enter it correctly every time.

Never mind - it was case-sensitive. D-oh!

Thanks for the link. I hadn't heard of him before. He looks like a young guy...but very talented. I like his work.

I wrote to him once begging him to take me on a wedding shoot... no luck. He didn't want my help.

Great idea - I'm moving out to Ithaca to study at Cornell in August. Will definately make a note of that website!

My family just sold the farm in Geneva. But I visit the area frequently as all my relatives are buried there and I take care of the graves (was just in Geneva) as well as have friends from Watkins Glen to Canandaigua. I registered last night but never got the confirmation email it said I should receive. Although the members list shows me, I cannot log into the site.

Just tried again and got this:

I'm not really surprised. He brings his wifey Liesl and he pretty much has his way of doing things. I have emailed him as another photography studio and he pretty much yelled at me for using his WRONG email address. Bah. Not my favorite PERSON, but a terribly good photographer. You can come help us sometime. :)

Ok, I don't want to really be a stand-out or anything, but I looked at the neil cowley site and I have to say - I am not at all impressed. A lot of his shots look like snapshots. A lot seem to have severe DoF problems and most are not very creative or original. A lot of them have large washed out areas. A lot of them also look fuzzy or soft or just plain not focused properly. I know, I will get slammed for this probably, but it is just my opinion.

Not slammed, but

1) Top 10 in WPJA 3 years in a row.
2) 1st place images in WPJA contests for 2005: Emotion and Five from One.
3) 1st place image in WPJA Bride and Groom for 1st quarter of 2004.

This guy wins awards like Kiwi and Heida win ribbons. Everyone may not have his style or whatever, but if you can charge $5000-7000 a wedding, win awards, have the respect of the professional body you belong to AND be nationally known....I'll take that. :)

Chris, you're right. I had looked quickly at some of the wedding shots and the ones I viewed were pretty nice. I just went through his other galleries and they weren't so good. I did like "faces" though. In the Lifestyle gallery the little girl on the potty struck me as a bit odd... It looks like (to me) that a lot of the blur is PS'd in. In some of the pics there were blurry and sharp parts on the same plane.

This has probably reached most everyone, but one last bump for good measure...

Wow! I was just at Keuka Lake last week, but now I'm back home. Took lots off pictures while I was there though (very different from the beach ).
