I have received two pm's clearly sent by the same person. Here is the body of the email:

Hiya,

Fantastic shot in the galleries

the reason im messaging you is because i was so impressed with your
shot i thought i would invited you to join an invite only forum that
im part of. its a newly formed by pro photograpers aimed at pro
photographers and advanced ametuers, its called

www.prophotographyforum.com

basically its a place where you can give and receive valuable critique
and feedback from pro photographers. We're always on the lookout for
talented photographers and feel that you would be a great addition to
the forum. we offer a free gallery feature (brand new as of 14th may)
im not asking you to switch forums (of course! i know i couldnt), just
to see what you think of the new club of ours!

with thanks

grace

The first message was sent on July 2nd from a profile called babygrace and again from a profile called angelgrace on July 7th. These two profiles clearly belong to the same person. The reason I am posting this is to advise Site Council that someone is using the pm function to send out spam.

Yeah I got that one from BABYGRACE too!

Yah, I got it too. :-(

I knew when I saw that the user had just registered with DPC that it was pure solicitation.

How about the fact the person has 2 accounts?

on a website that I used to run, if people hadn't posted in 3 weeks or so, they were either asked to leave or start posting. I know it's kinda a pain, but it meant that we had people interested in actually using the site and not time wasters....

yesterday when I logged on I had to re-verify my account even though I post on threads often (maybe too often in some eyes). I was happy to do it as I'm hoping it is DPC's way of weeding out the extra accounts. Hope this can stop the spaming, this is a nice site and shouldn't be abused.

Don't feel bad. I'm not even good enought to get SPAM. :)

Yep, I got it the other day as well. I first noticed it was more like a form letter than anything corresponding to me personally, and then noticed the same thing about the new membership. Why can't people just go on AOL to send their spam like everybody else? :-P

Got mine this morning... At least they can't mass pm us but have to do it one at a time. More determination than I got...

When this was brought to our attention awhile ago, we cancelled the accounts. However, it appears that he's found away around that and I have brought this situation up for the site council again. Thank you for bringing it to our attention that this is still happening. Hopefully we'll be able to put a stop to it soon. We have secret powers, so no need to make suggestions as to 'what to do'. It just takes awhile to get SC all together. Be patient.

Also needing mentioned. Everybody make sure you have your e-mail address hidden. If anyone wants to contact you through here they can easily pm you.

I just have noticed a lot of new members and registered users here showing their e-mail addresses and wanted to inform.

its been so long since I joined up I forgot the whole registration process.

How about DPC make a change to the way members are registered.

an Astronomy site I am a member to has VERY tight controls on who can register and how soon they can begin snooping around (reading and posting to the forums). But some bad appls do sneak in from time to time. Your valid email address MUST be a traceable email account, not a hotmail, yahoo or other free email account, your email MUST be through a valis ISP or a domain registered in your name.

What if a person can NOT PM or post messages until the account is verified via email or some grace period it met. Or them must post a few messages before they can PM

example:

trickdicky123 wants to become a registered user to DPC. he/she must fill out their info: name, location and a VALID email address and what ever else DPC wants to know.

a verification email is sent to them with in 2 to 12 hours (or 30 minutes). the verification email has some cryptic code they must hand type (no clicky linky) to verify their registration.

This might deter some, but not all

James

You do have to have a valid email address in order to join, and I believe you do also have to verify that email address.
I think the problem with postponing new users from posting and pming is the need for a lot of newbies to ask questions. If you get here, and can't figure something out, and have no way of posting a question...are you going to stick around? I get frusterated easily, so I probably wouldn't.
We rarely have a 'bad seed' that abuses the system...however, every day, newbies are confused. ;)

This should be the default way it is handled IMO

Simple....

Limit the number of PMs that a new non-paid user can make the first three months. 10-12 should be enough. Or limit the number of people they can PM. So you could send unlimited PM's to your first 10 members. (So if someone is corresponding it would not take from the total of 10. But would restrict them from spamming the whole bunch of us.)

to those that are web savy its easy to get in and send PM's from any account, for example I could send anyone here a PM from their account to their account or any account for that matter, just ignore it. its not worth the effort
