I am currently a university student enrolled in the first year of Bachelor of Arts. I was thinking about switching to Science and do major in Mathematics, because it brings quite an income, but I think I feel that I really want to do photography. So my questions to you are:
1. What kind of opportunites are out there for a fresh out of university student in the photography field?
2. How hard is it to find a job?
3. What kind of salaries can one expect to start off with and how long would it take to get a good salary?

thanks,
sorry if my questions are some what obscure, i am really at a point of life where I am not sure what to do..

Let see, if you get an in-house photo job at a company you'll make 20-40 a year. Assisting, maybe 18 starting out. In 10-15 years after you have accumilated like 20-30 grand in gear, assuming you have some average clients. Maybe 50 a year, maybe.

My recomendation would be to get you degree in science and or mathematics. Keep photography as a wonderful hobby while earning a good income to buy gear. Then after you have all the gear you think you might need you can decide whether to go out on your own or not. If you do decide to go the photography route, get a minor in business to go along with it.

There are so many opportunities in photography, but you also need business skills also. So if your are interested in photography, start taking some photoography classes (to be sure you really like the technical parts), but also take some business classes and some journalism classes. Talk with your photography and journalism professors (or ones at your university in that field) as well as the job placement people at your school.

Entry level jobs for you could be at a portrait studio, a newspaper, a magazine. But many photographers eventually run their own business - so you need the business skills.

Good luck!

Stick with the math to make a living, do photography on the side for fun. Just my $.02.
