Anyone have good ideas for creative lighting? I looked into lightboxes etc. but they're all expensive. I have a workshop halogen lamp with a whopping 500 watts but it has a yellow tinge to it. Isn't white better to get a good white balance for the image?

you can correct for the yellowish lighting with the correct white balance setting with no problems :-)

yeap, unless you have mixed light sources just change your white balance. If you have mixed light sources then flashes and studio strobes give white light. A good cheap way for creative lighting is cheap flashes on optical slaves.
