I'm new to photography, and even newer to this site.I've seen some INCREDIBLE photos here. Photos that provoke powerful and rare emotions; then I view the voting breakdown and see a few 2's and 3's. Surely "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"...but come on!
Even the Blue Ribbon photos have a few low ratings...Whats up? |

Because they were not mine. I am the alpha and the omega of photography ;) Some things just don't appeal to everyone I guess.
Rest assured, for every bad vote you get, someone else is getting one too...I think they even themselves out in the end.

If we all agreed on everything, how boring would this life be?

How seriously should you take dpc?
Enter 20 times - you'll take it as seriously as it warrants after that.
edit: Your 1st picture was way better than mine, but you will learn a lot if you stick around.

Joining DPC is like walking into any packed sports stadium in the world. A good majority of that crowd are level headed, fair, decent people with their head on straight that think like the majority.
A good amount of those people have all the same qualities but think a bit outside the "norm", and that's not only fine but great.
Another portion of that crowd will just leave you scratching your head and wondering what the Hell could motivate them to be / act like they do.
Like all idiots in the world, it's best to just ignore them and focus on the positive. |

At this website, people use the whoooole voting scale. 5 is a decent, average vote...most likely a very good photo by the standards of non-photographers.
Edit: This website has by far the most genuine community I've seen in my limited web-travels.
I've had offers to lend me photo equipment, somebody has shipped me a filter to use on a trip to Europe(!), people have bought other people a camera after theirs was broken/stolen, people get together in 'real life' all the time, people help each other's careers here...it's really cool.

Focus on the "community" part, and you will soon see why so many of us love this site. I second what rscorp said, but you will also find many people willing to go above and beyond the call of decent, fair, level-headed folks. There are many people here that I admire for their community spirit and support, and I have never met most of them.
Welcome aboard, and have fun.
Linda
PS: I see that your "profile" is a bit sketchy. It would be nice to know who/where/what you are. Give us a little bio info. |

My 2 cents.... Art is subjective. Among a large group (which you will find here) you will often find a vast spectrum of opinions. However, good photographs will always surface in the end, and bad photographs will fall to the bottom after all of the opinions have been weighed. You will get a good idea of the overall appeal of your images here, and some good critique that will hopefull help you to make better and better shots as you go.

Let me inject this: I've found the majority of the people here to be fair and genuinely helpful. I haven't used my computer this much since I first got one in 1997. |

...community? just by following this thread, my wife and I found out that jrtoddlives in Utah (I am not a stalker, really)and has some very picturesque scenery to shoot. I would LOVE to be able to see this in real life. I, on the other hand have the monuments and historical sites of Washington DC at my disposal. How cool is it to be able to build friendships (if you choose) and see other places through the eyes of others. This site represents many, many places and cultures and it excites me to browse through and see others pictures. As far as challenges go, I am a very technical person and am trying to learn to "see" the world differently. I just take all the comments in stride as everyone sees things differently.

I recall recently that someone posted that they needed a few digital cameras for youngsters to use at a volunteer workshop they were doing. Finding out that the budget was short he asked for help here and not only did people send him their extra cameras, some bought a few and others who lived near by ( about an hours drive)volunteered to go along and help him. You get alot more out of this site than what is on the surface. As for the money, the advice, opinions, friendship and kindred souls are priceless. |

One of our members broke her camera, and generous DPCers took up a collection to buy her a new one. That sort of family is priceless.

never take anything too seriously....there is good and not so good in everything....decide what you want out of this and go for it...there are laughs to be had and lots to learn...and help at the drop of hat...but sometimes comments can sting if you let them...remember the biggest downfall of this marvel called the internet...you are reading peoples words without the emotions that are meant to go with it....so read something that you might find rude a few times and think how else it might meant to be intended....also remember we here at dpc are global...language barriers play into the picture...
now sit back enjoy and have a great time!!!!
