Food for Thought: I remember back in 1970 when Paul McCartney released his album, RAM, there was a picture on the back of the cover, of two beetles "doing it". It sent a clear message as to what he thought of his former group, the Beatles at that time. In our most recent challenge, I have notice a couple of images with insects, "doing it". I wonder if this "sexual act" is something that is accepted according to the rules of this web page. Are these tasteful images? I know this is a bit of a streach, but the rules do say...
"Nudity is an acceptable form of art on this site. Photographs may not, however, show male or female genitalia or any acts of sex."
We, that patrons of dpc are always talking about the 'exact wording' of a challenge. What does it mean, we always ask. Does the statement above, refer only to humans? Is it okay to photograph animals having sex and present it on this website. Would two monkeys having sex be okay. Where is the line drawn?
As I said, this is food for thought, and I'm curious where others stand on this point.

that, my friend, would depend heavily on the voter. some may think it is a nice expression form of "art" while some may, without much consideration, brand you a dirty pervert trying to destroy the minds of their kid(s) |

If they can have hour-long shows about sex in the animal kingdom on TV, I think it should be fair game on DPC ;P
I know you didn't say it was - but I don't see anything lewd about the reproductive process.

If this rule is upheld it must be done fairly loosely as I have seen a couple photos on this site that certainly do show the genitalia.

As long as you're able to squish the subjects with your thumb after photographing them, I think it's fine. Anything larger than that would get me in trouble with my wife.

Human society is so screwed up (pardon the pun) with all of our taboos and sexual repression. Can you imagine what the world would be like if we used the act of intercourse for reproduction only; and not to control or otherwise harm our fellow humans? Can you imagine a world without paedophiles, rapists, sex addicts, or pornography? I wish we lived in a society where a picture of genitals was no more titillating than a picture of an ear. Of course, that's impossible to undo. And I'm not being judgemental, as I'm a product of this same society.
But please, let's not extend our sickness to the natural act of reproduction in the natural world. |

You are kinda beating around the bush on the question. Where does 'nature' start or stop? It's okay to photograph monkeys, dogs, or lions 'in the act of reproduction', but it's not okay to photograph people doing the same, because people are not part of nature...? I think that is what I'm hearing here.
I'm not taking a stand for or against, just wondering where the line is drawn, and why, exactly. It's a fine line, be sure of that.

yeah it sure is a fine line. It doesn't bother me, but I'm sure there are people out there that it would bother. Just depends where you stand on those type of things huh? I guess that's what makes us different, having our own opinions. Some people may like them, others may not. I've learnt that you can never make everyone happy no matter what you do. Me, I try and minimise the damage lol

I agree, and I have put lot of thought into it. What I was getting at is that people are sexually repressed, and therefore, the act of human reproduction has so many negative connotations that it's virtually impossible IMO to photograph this as a "natural" act. We have taken this act out of the realm of nature by placing our restrictions upon it.
Unfortunately this extends to a lot of animals, too; especially domestic animals and primates. I won't go into some of the images that I've had the misfortune of seeing on the internet. But suffice it to say that some people are more interested in animal sex than human sex. So that kind of ruins it for them too. Personally I don't have an aversion to images of any animals copulating. I have seen very few that were actually good photographs (technically or artistically) I like images of insects, and I doubt there are few humans out there that find insects attractive enough to have a fetish for (Though you never can tell).
So to make a long post longer; in answer to your question. I think that all sex is natural, but all humans can't handle that. So nature stops with humans because we have chosen it to be so. |
