Hands - A picture YOU take of one or both of YOUR OWN hands performing some task/doing something.
Extra Rules:
You must take the picture yourself.
At least one of your hands must be clearly discernable.
No other body part above the elbow can be present in the frame.
No other persons hand or body part can be in the shot.
No camera equipment, camera, accessories, film, dark room equipment/set-ups can be in the shot. In other words, can have no element of photography in the shot.

I would propose 'Open Tryptych'.
Take three 'themed' photographs and present them as a tryptych. The theme can be any subject but the three frames must be linked in some way. Use your post processing skills to present the three images in a single 640pixel wide submission.

I like the vague and more open ideas better, in my opinion. When you get specific it becomes increasingly difficult to please the voters and that's when you get more of the low scorings because they don't think it fits the challenge description. When you have vague ideas like landscape or water- where all you have to do is take a photo that deals with the subject- it becomes easier to find a photo, allows for more quality and the only way a voter can score you low on a technicality is if you completely failed have water in your picture. |

Critiqing:
1. A forum thread and email is used to solicit "partners".
2. Partner 1 sends photo to partner 2.
3. Partner 2 critiques.
4. Partner 1 edits per the critique
5. Partner 1 uploads a triptych -
a) Original Critiqued photo
b) Critique text (bitmap capture)
c) Final photo
Rating is for critique and photo. Quality of critique, quality of photo, artistic merit, etc., as usual.
Both are anonymous until after the challenge. Both get ribbons if the photo wins. Critiquer's ID per comments.
Or something like that! The idea is to get people to practice and do good critiques, and see how they are applied to the image.

Interesting idea, but the step 4. Partner 1 edits per the critique is a little difficult. I find that critiques can be places to suggest different viewpoints, different angles, which would require re-shoot. That might not be possible

Something that might be helpful would be to split the challenges up into groups. Obviously there is a wide range of experience in this group. Some people are doing lots of studio stuff etc. So maybe breaking things into groups ... by experience , by camera types (SLRs vs non-slrs) , natural light only etc. That might mix things up a bit.

An Art Challenge since there seems to be so many people here that are tired of the technical lean to the site.
I'm not sure how to pen the description but the common eye candy type of images should have no place in the challenge.
You could pick almost any of these photographers to emulate. Many of the images found on that site would score in the low 4's on DPC and I think their styles should not be lost in the steroid driven digital rage.
A "No Eye Candy Challenge"???

Challenge topic: Center Subject
Details: Breaking the rule of thirds is not always a bad thing. Take a creative picture where your subject is centered within your photograph.

Now, I think for a REALLY unique challenge, we SHOULD try having JUST the title, without the (apparently) confusing extra description.
Extra Rule: Anyone who posts to a forum discussing the "meaning of the challenge topic" is INELIGIBLE.
|
What a great idea!!! those forum discussions are too much!!! |
Cool I like it only if we add
Extra Extra Rule: Any whining what-so-ever after the challenge and that person becomes ineligible from all challenges for a month.

What about taking a member challenge that's been done, but making it open? The one that comes to mind is the Billboards challenge...by making it an open challenge, surely there would be some more unique shots generated. |

glad you didn't say Macro of Nude Self Portrait ;)
I was thinking a challenge of a "What Is It" shoot a part of something in such a way, either close up or unique angle, that doesn't allow the viewer to know what it is until they see the title. Image should be clear and not blurred to hide its identity. (Or maybe worded better.)
Just a thought...just noticed my idea could also fit the macro nude self portrait idea.

We had an abstract challenge a while ago. It's probably time for a re-visit.

I love the more artsy type photo challenge. Or what about one where you can do nothing but crop or convert to black and white AND THAT'S IT. It would rely on your eye and not your ability to manipulate software.
Here are some other suggestions:
Music - this would leave the door wide open to tons of perspectives
Symbols - this challenge involves capturing something symbolic or that serves as a symbol
Creative Images With Ordinary Things - Take normal stuff like a spoon or hammer and do something creative. Just sitting singly on a table with interesting light is NOT enough.
Faceless People - a challenge where you need for a person to be the focal point but not a straight on full facial view is allowed.
Time Without Clocks - what is your perception of time? No clocks or watch shots allowed for this challenge
Movement - capture anything in the act of moving
Dumpster Diver - oh, we did that with Obscure (LOL)

No more picture of parrots either.

One challenge I've been waiting for to come around again (I wasn't here for the first time):
Unusual viewpoint
the original desc:
Take a photograph from an unusual viewpoint to improve composition and add interest.
- I have a good idea to put into this challenge.
And I'd like to see more techincal challenges, to make me aware of the different "modes" of photographs, like the Bokeh challenge.
There has been a granular challenge, but what about Grain or noise challenge? Sometimes you can use it to add to the impact, or create a special mood. In the philosophy of: if you can't beat them, join them (or, according to Ozzy: if you can't lick 'em, lick 'em)
Classical categories of photos are are also handy: landscapes, portraits, nudes, macro, stop motion, blur, pan etc.
And I'd also like to see some more arty challenges, and some that focus on people and emotions. The recent challenges of that kind have been dark and depressing, what about something on the lines of happy happy joy joy, like games, playful, erotic, smile, fun, concentration etc?
Edit: I also like the current (and recent) geometric forms, like circle and triangle. Could do rectangle, hexagon, cone or square.
And since this has been a common feature to many ribbons:
Droplet Creatively capture a droplet.
Extra rules: no flags
And deja vu II: Do a remake of the challenge photo on DPC that you've always wanted to try your hand at. NO RIBBONS

I posted these ideas at the start of the year, maybe they need a little bump?
Brian-find someone called Brian and take his picture.
Grass-Grass seems to be everywhere these days, find some and compose a picture with it.
Dandruff-Dandruff afflicts roughly 42.73% of the population, see if you can take a picture of some in it's natural environment.
Bucket-Buckets are all around us, take a look, you are probably sitting next to one right now. Your goal is to creatively capture a bucket (advanced editing rules apply)
Turd-Often overlooked in the photographic world, why not try and capture a candid picture of a turd (doesn't have to be human)
Under the bed-basically a free study, but the picture must be taken whilist you are under a bed.
Drunk-we've all seen them, now take your camera and get an embarrassing photo of a drunk (preferably falling off a chair or with a big wet patch on their pants)
nails-we've all got them show us how you use yours in action.

Thanks Robert. I know there would be interest in such challenge. The circle challenge is loaded with them.
Fractals, in general, would be another choice of mine.

Underwear - some of it is normal evereday, some of it is sexy, but almost all of us wear it (except the brave ones who go commando). Take a creative image using underwear as the key subject. People are optional.
