Perhaps they were just telling you what they would have given you; it's a rating, whether it counts or not. Comments are important, there are never enough of them, and we should not do things to discourage them. |

I doubt they were trying to lie to fit in. It's not like it isn't plainly obvious who is a paid member and who isn't. I think it was nice of them to leave a comment regardless. |

Fetor, I'm also a non-paid member of this website, and thus, I couldnt vote for the closed challenges. However, I would brose thru the thumbnails in my leisure and click on photos that catches my eye. And if so happens i admire the work, i would leave a comment and how much i think the photo is worth (as in votes, not $). |

Dude...........if I recall, you freeze your arm with a spraycan and then submit it onto a thread for critique. Hmmmmm....you might not be in a position to question the motives of others. Ya think?? |

Fetor, I was not the person that voted, but I take offense at your suggestion that non-paying registered users lie to ourselves to "fit in".
I vote and make comments to "fit in". My comments made to receive ratio is about 2 to 1. I try to add value in the forums to "Fit In", untill I can sort out this money order thing. (I live in South Africa. No Paypal).
And besides, if someone were to misguidedly vote in the gilded off limits Member only contest, would it not be better to mail or PM that individual and inform them, instead of laughing at them in your thread topic?
Tsk tsk. |

dear gosh people, everyone has done it one point in thier lives, including myself, and yes i do know who it was who made the comment, i was simply exploiting an example of the kind of behavior we are all guilty of

'Guilty of???' You call it 'lying to fit in?' if someone gives you a 9 because they think your entry is nice, although they (and you) know it won't count eventually?
I call it 'friendly' and 'supportive' and I wish a lot of people out there had the guts to comment that way more often, because the 'member' voters hardly comment at all as we can read again and again in every single challenge thread.
I don't care if it was the man in the moon who voted a 9 on one of my photos just to let me know that he loved it.
Them non paying-members may comment on my photo any time they want to. And like BlackDot said, the reasons of being a non paying member isn't always because they don't want to pay, but simply because they can't technically or just don't have the means for it.

Is it possible that this person didn't realise they couldn't vote on members' challenges? Let's give them the benefit of the doubt and thank them for trying! If you don't want the comment, pass it this way!!!!:)

How did this person give you a 9 if he is a non-paying member, I too don't have a paid account and when I view the Macro challenge it does not give me a scale to pick numbers and states that I can only comment. Do you mean they just told you they would have given you a 9?
I also don't understand how this is a lie to fit in? Are you saying because someone isn't paying they are just a wanna-be paid member and only fooling themselves thinking their input is even sought or appreciated? I try to comment on pictures whether I can vote or not because I have an opinion of the image and maybe (certainly not always) helpful tips.
I wonder if since I'm not using a DSLR I'm just lieing to myself about being a photographer.

Sorry Fetor, but this sounds just a tad bit ungrateful and juvenile if you ask me... you might want to appreciate the time someone took to leave you a comment in the first place and be thankful that it's all anonymous because after a statement like that you might not have recieved many more comments at all. I'm just sayin' ....

For the record I got a comment on my entry for the Macro Challenge
from a registered user telling me "6" and a few other suggestions. I found it very helpful and am glad he took the time to comment on my little entry regardless if he could vote or not. |

I got the same, only they gave me a 5....wait they gave you a 6....I was going to say something good but now??...
I hate threads that bash comments, they are so few and far between sometimes. Personally I have had very few comments that I didn't learn something from if I allowed myself to be objective. Everyone has something else they could be doing other that sitting here and taking valuable time to leave comments and for someone who is not eligible to vote to leave a comment...commend them instead.

Just an observation... maybe somewhat of a hard lesson learned for a young man, and time now to move to other things. |

rex, I wasn't pointing anything at you, only agreeing with your post and disagreeing with the start of the tread. But it looks like the post from marcothing has put this to bed. Very well done I might add.

I had as much fun as a non paying member, then decided to pay up to enter more challenges so that I would receive comments from people who would point me in the right direction. If I'd left a comment like that for someone and got this reply back, I'd be pretty hurt. Then again, I'm a pretty soft person. However,I hope your comment doesn't put them off doing it again, nor becoming a paid member if they so wish to do. I would gladly receive comments that didn't count point wise, especially as they took the time and effort to leave me one (and I need all the help I can get lol (",))Hope this doesn't put you off macrothing.

>>the lies we tell to fit in ;)<<
Would you call it a lie if they named it a "favorite"?
I would love to have more "lies" like those!
