In light of this thread, as well as several other recent instances of dq'd ribbons, I suggest that in the future all challenge results be delayed for 24 hours (or whatever amount of time needed) so that the winning photos can all be confirmed beforehand. Just the top three... it's less of a big deal for the also-rans IMO.

It's draining enough waiting for that 12.00 to come around, delaying it by another day would finish most people off. We all know the rules and accept that the winners will have to submit originals, I see no reason to change things.

Also, there's no guarantee that after a specified period of time all DQ requests etc will be resolved.

Oh, amber, 24 hours won't kill you :o) But I can only imagine what it would feel like to finally score a ribbon only to have it DQ'd in front of the world :>(

As for resolving all dq requests, that isn't my suggestion, but only the top three. I dunno, maybe change actually IS the most frightening thing.

Seriously it would;) I think I was the only person that actually sat at the PC for the full 6 hours when the system crashed last week. I'm a masochist at heart:))

As for imagining winning a ribbon and then being DQ'd...I'm afraid I will never be in that position;)

we've run into a few occasions where "new" winners were then dq'd (see the Apple challenge), so that wouldn't always work.

i agree that it does suck to have a ribbon taken away from you, but right now we're doing the best we can. the reason most of these aren't debated previously is because they haven't had DQ requests during the voting and, thus, no reason for us to look at the originals. it's the comparison to the originals that ends up catching up a lot of people.

nah, ray, after thinking about it, i think it's best left as it is. i don't think there's really a problem to fix. it doesn't matter to me if there's a reshuffling, but i do think it's tough enough waiting a week.

U-N-C-L-E!! See, I don't put up much of a fight... but it's nice to be able to make a suggestion and get such a quick response.

Hat's off, certainly, to the site council folks who give their time to make dpc work. But I was just thinkin', since you guys already have to verify to top scoring photos, why not publish blue/yellow/red AFTER they are verified? (Honestly, just restating the suggestion in case there was any confusion as to what I meant, but not to argue. Really!)

do you mean re-program the part of the site that puts the ribbons on the three highest scoring images? like, maybe, put a ghosted out ribbon on the first three that has a blinking pending sign on it...

;-)

^^^^^^^ I see that wink!

But I'll respond anyway (heh heh).... Say voting on a particular challenge runs from Monday through Sunday. After voting is over, nothing happens on the website... results pending. Then on Tuesday.... results! See? The results are delayed until they can be verified. (Oh so simple, or so it seems to me...)

what if someone is away on monday are results going to be pushed till wednesday or even thursday? The best thing i can think off is asking proof of submissions for the leading ten images say on day 4 or 5 of voting since scores wont be changing too much and it will give a nice 48 to 72 hour advance till b4 the results come out.

dude, unless you are trying to wake ken & slippy out of a deep slumber, or bring them back from some pitchfork retreat, you might not want to be banging these pots too loudly...

oooo just found out something interesting... apperently only one person without a camera voted on the leading lines challenge so if you show all results you can scroll through the images and see how he/she/it (not discounting any robot voters) voted on each individual photo. pretty cool, huh?

apperently he/she/it gives out only 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s...

Oh, hell, they're virtual pots anyway. To go with their virtual pitchforks.

But nevermind that, it was just an idea. Uncle, again... and in the meantime I've got to get some shuteye... I have to get up and do it all over again in a little less than five hours. Talk to you later.

I think that embarrasing people for rules violations and removing their ribbons are a good reason to leave things the way they are. It kinda keeps people honest in general. I know I wouldn't wanna be embarrased that way so wouldn't intentionally enter a shot out of date or with illegal editing...

I wouldn't think most people do it delibrately, I think more often than not it is accidental...I don't see it as embarrassing.
