Seriously off the beaten path, topic-wise, this post has little to do with photography. I'm guessing I'm not the only person here who does graphic design, and I'm interested in your take of the following:

I'm about 99% sure I just got a job doing quite a lot of commercial design for a new "biotech" company. The owner already has 5 other companies, one of which is on the stock exchange and is worth over 200 million.

Had a meeting with the owner last week regarding his new company. He wants to migrate a new product to western markets. It's being sold in China, at the moment, and would probably need a makeover to do well in the American market.

I believe he needs the following:
- new name for the product that will appeal to American consumers
- a logo with the new name for brand name recognition
- new packaging to appeal to the "western" market
- magazine ads
- brochures (tri-fold, probably)

Note: I'm NOT doing the actual marketing. Another firm will do that. My job is to create an image for the product and its advertising.

Now that you know where this is going, I'm going to ask "do any of you have any experience with this level of work"? If I get the job (pretty sure I have it) it will make him my biggest client ever, with plenty of opportunity to do more work for him in the future.

So how should I approach pricing for the work? I normally work on a per-hour basis, but this seems to be more of a "package deal". Are there any resources I can turn to for advice? I want to give him a good price to ensure his future business, but I also want to make a reasonable amount of money for my time.

I'm a graphic designer. Buy a Graphic Artist Guild Guideline Book today! This is the best valuable resource for pricing graphic design. Good luck to you!!!

For a (wannabe) big company, the logo design alone should probably run $1-5000. As suggested, get the industry price book and pick an average amount, but don't underprice yourself (like I always do!). Good luck!

There are some books published for the field called "Corporate Identity Design". You may find a lot of good info in one of these books to get you through the hard parts.

Since I have not done very much of this work, I can not reccommend a specific book. On Amazon.com you can search for these books and read the reviews.

Good designing,

Rod
