I want to take pictures of fireworks tonight...but I'm not sure what kind of settings I should have my camera on (Canon 20D). Because the fireworks are bright, does that mean I should have a relatively fast shutter speed and medium aperature...or should things be set more for nighttime shooting (i.e. stars)? I won't be able to preview what I'm shooting, so I'd like to get a good idea before I actually take pictures. If anyone has any great examples (with EXIF data) of fireworks, I'd love to see them. Thanks in advance.

here are some of my fireworks shots with some exif data

most of the ISO setings are ISO 200 or ISO 400

july 4, 2003

July 4th 2004

July 3rd, 2005

a few other pointers.

1. Before the show starts, set your camera up like this
ISO 200, apeture F8, Shutter speed 2 or 3 seconds, or if you have a remote, put it it in Manual mode and set it to bulb and F8, this way you control how long you want the shutter open

2. Pick a bright distant object in the direction of where the fireworks will be displayed. Focus on that object and them set your lens to manual focus.

3. Once the show starts click the shutter just before the burst and release when you want to.

any other questions???

I have a 10D. I used iso: 100 shutter: bulb App: 8, focused manually on infinity. Worked wonders a few days ago and will work again tonight :)
The trick with bulb is to trigger the shutter just before the firework opens and stop when it goes dark. that way you don't have to time anything else.
