OK, I've looked at the macro entries and outakes and quite a few now have the 105mm + 50mm inverted. I have that too but my DOF is incredibly shalow!!! Like 1mm!!

How do you guys get a whole fly's head in focus!?

Thx!

Can be expanded fractionally by using a smaller aperture, or by using a wider angle on the zoom lens then cropping.

Otherwise, try and get the detail you want to capture into the 1mm zone: makes it important to get faces, etc, flat on, if you want to capture the whole area in focus.

from my experience, yes the dof is very shallow with the 100mm and 50mm reversed...
this is the shot I took with it

I shot this at F16 ( to increase the dof) but this is all I could get and yes its very shallow..
You are not alone :)

If you really want to make macro shots i would say a flash ring or even a out of the camera flash, but it really is better a flash ring, and then increase your f to f40 to get a big DOF, make sure your sensor is really clean or else expect those dust spots on the photo..
This is my 2cents, all thought i don't have a flash ring i use the Ex 580 flash on the canon, and get some nice results...

Thanks guys for your feedback. It makes sense to have my f-stop on the 105mm as high as possible to compensation for the f1.8 on the 50mm.

Your flash idea Frederico is a good tip! Thx! With that I should be able to go up to f45!! :-) Maybe I'll get a good 3mm in!!

Would using such a high F-stop as f45 cause diffraction artifacts and degrade image quality?

in my small experience i have not have had a problem with f40...
But i am just starting of with macro shots and have been having a nice photos with f40...
Maybe if i experience more i will have a better anwser for that..

Yes, things will get progressively softer. When the final destination is the web, though, it may be preferrable to get the DoF at the expense of a little resolution, since the lost sharpness won't be nearly so apparent at web resolution.

I am in process of doing some experiments. So far this is what I have
Setup Canon100mm + 50mm reversed
1) Minimum focus distance 16mm with magnification 3.6x
2) Maximum focus distance 31mm with mangification 2.0x

Now let me go back and find the dof at both these distances. May be for test I will use F8 for both
Any other suggestions ?
