The subject was just an attempt to peak your curiosity...

I wanted to ask for some additional critique on my shot from last week which was actually a printout of the "reflection" of a flower (don't know the name) shot with the flower in front.

I was pretty happy with the result (since I'm not much of a still life photographer - but using dpc as an opportunity to learn), but a little disappointed with the score. I am wondering if it's because the shot didn't meet the challenge, or wasn't that interesting?

Also, do you interpret the image as a reflection? (I guess confusion could have stemmed from the difference in color between front & back)

You can click on the name "Orange and Blue" to see the shot!

Thanks for your feedback! :)

Yours was my number one image from last week. I was aware it was not a "genuine" reflection (the height of the "flowers" compared to the height of the "waters", etc.) but that didn't matter.

I gave your picture a 6, I commented that I liked it a lot but that I did not see the reflection in it (did a -2 for that). I am still not sure what you tried to do in the shot about reflection , like the flower reflecting herself in something with a different color ?
Anyway .. I like the shot a lot very good job and very nice color.
I am sorry if not that many people did see the reflection ... it's still a nice picture !

Merci Lionel! Your comment helps me understand a "shortcoming" of the shot. The relfection you see is actually the same flower you see in the foreground, shot from the back. I then printed that out (flipping it over so it would look like a mirror relfection) and shot the flower from the front.

It seems people did not think it was a reflection due to the difference in color between the front and back of the petals, which is somewhat unique to this flower.

Maybe I should have used something more familiar like a sunflower, or at least monochromatic, between back and front.

Im afraid that I was one of the ones that didnt get it. /smack self. The colour of the back of the flower head made me think it was a different flower. Also the different apparent height of the two glasses spoilt the reflection effect a little.

Now that I know your intention I think it's a superb idea.

Regardless of not getting it I thought it was an excellent still life - quality shot.

i got it chak. i looked at it as if the flower were sitting in front of a mirror--and thought that it was done very well. also your composition/ framing and color scheme were beautiful. very creative. i gave you a 9!

Thanks for your feedback everyone! In conclusion, it seems as suspected, not everyone saw the reflection - for fairly obvious reasons (color disparity and water level). Next time I will do a 2nd take to perfect the concept! :) Jakob
