I've been browsing this site/forum for a couple of months now, really impressed with some of the photos i'm seeing on here. Finally decided to register.
Anyway, a few weeks ago a friend of mine told me he had to tickets to Wimbledon this year so i decided to finally take the plunge and buy a digital camera. The only cameras i've had previous experience with are those little disposible ones you can buy 3 for £5.
Yesterday, i went to Wimbledon armed with my new Nikon Coolpix 4100, nothing to fancy, i just wanted a camera that i could point and my subject and take a picture.
I've just finished uploading the pictures. Here are the pictures i took. Well, i took a lot more but most of them are not worth showing. I know they are not master pieces but i am quite pleased with the way they have come out considering its the first time i had used a digital camera.
Just wanted to know what you guys/gals thought of them. Any tips/suggestions to make them better and any tips in general to make me a better photographer.
Thanks in advance for your comments/suggestions

Welcome Nolpster! Browsed through the tennis shots - not bad! Others can give you a better critique, but I like 'em.
Here's some tips to avoid the Angry Villagers - no whining, refrain from criticizing comments on your challenge entries, have fun & keep a strong sense of humor.
Also, don't believe anything you hear about me.

Hey, great shots Nolpster! I especially like the stop-action shots where the guy's feet are off the ground. The colors are really vibrant.
Welcome to dpChallenge, and good luck in your challenges!

Good shots. Very good for just starting off.
One thing to keep in mind for next time; try different composition focal points. All your shots where centered and mixing it up can create some great things.
Enjoy the new camera! |

Ahhhh, the joy of a new camera. How fun! Nice shots, I have nothing to add to the previous posters, I'd say they got it right on the money :) Except for maybe part of what Kpriest said, I hear he......uh nevermind.
Enjoy the new camera and keep sharing your images with us, they were fun to see for this American. |

What? What did you hear?? Tell me! I'm getting banned, aren't I? I knew it!! Geez you'd think nobody ever posted a "pilsekirts" virus and brought down the DPC server during a challenge calculation before!
You haven't heard the last of meeeeeeeee...... :P

OMG, I knew it was you. The "Kpriest Did It Committee" warned me about you as soon as I registered, Ummm, I mean I heard about you :)
Just lay off the pileskirts viruses if I enter a challenge ok, I might require some kind of meds if I can't hit the update button or at least see the disappointing results, lol. |

I'm not sure how to do that on the camera, i'll have to check the manual. Would you mind being more specific on what particular pictures you are talking about. I assume you mean the pictures like this and this one, to stop the blurring.

I was just reading about the rule of thirds and the golden mean from this link. Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I'm going to try to go out later today with the camera and get some more shots. Hopefully i'll post back later with some more pics.
Thanks again to everyone who has replied

Hey there Chris ....Welcome!! You've made a very good start with those pics. I think you've got great timing on the action shots and I really like the way you've shown a selection of the action, the event and the people.
this shot is one of my favourites. The ball coming in, the blur of the raquet and the off the ground capture of the player all make for a really nice photo.
A little playing round with a photo editing programme like photoshop can make a real difference to the final look. Though I'm not the best at it I had a little play with your image, I hope you don't mind. It could look way better than this done by many of the talented people here.
I hope you enjoy yourself here, have fun with the challenges

Nice. Good fast photos. Only thing i maybe would have done differently, is the composition. I personally like to look at photos where the subject is compositioned in the thirds of a photo.
I know, that they are sports photography, but it still feels like it could use a slight compositing.
When i started photography, my photos used to look like crap, and i wondered for a long time what was wrong. Then i discovered the Rule of Thirds. It's not a magic trick or something that instantly makes your photos look miraculous. Just something that makes them look.... Nicer..
I would suggest reading //www.silverlight.co.uk/tutorials/compose_expose/thirds.html and any other photography guides/tutorials you can find |

No, i don't mind in the slightest. I like what you have done with my photo. I think i've still still got an old version of photoshop lying around somewhere from when i was at University. Not really sure what i'm doing with it though, i'll scour the web for some tutorials.

Thanks, i'm reading up about the rule of thirds at the moment. I'll check out your link.
Right, i'm going out now to see if there's anything intersting around here i can take pictures of.
