I ask the question because of my current signature line. I know some turn off signatures but most keep them on. Do you consider mine to big? I have it there because all profits from my photographs and referrals are going to ClubJuggles walk for MS, but if it’s considered to large I can reduce it to make the threads easier to read. Any opinions on this subject?

It's ok but you should change the colors for each link. It would make it easier to see. Otherwise all the boxes look the same.

| Maybe drop the CJ link down a line to see what it looks like. |

Some would say it gets too long when you put something in it.
In your post starting this thread, on my screen, the text of the post takes up as much vertical room as the signature does. If that is the normal size of the posts, it's fine -- for me, it's too large when it takes more vertical space than most of your posts.
Pictures are nearly always not desired.

It doesn't distort the forum for me, so I'd say it's ok. I consider it too big if it scrolls my screen. (which is easy since I have my res set smaller)
I think it's considerate of people to only post their sig once in each thread if their sig is larger. There is no need really to post it 15 times in one thread. So if you are concerned, that's always an option too. |

i like mine. =]
but, i agree, your buttons are large and seem to each be ~50% dpcPrints and Click To View (a lot of repeated info), maybe make them smaller with just the portfolio titles?

I agree with what faidoi said. At first glance, it does look like you just have 3 identical things. As far as size, I don't find it anywhere near as annoying as some I've seen here, but a touch smaller might not hurt either :-) And that's a good point about turning it off when posting multiple times to a thread, I don't think it would be intrusive at all then (not saying it is now, you know what I mean...I hope)

i dont even read singatures, lol.
if i like your photos and want to buy a print, i'd have to be able to see them first. maybe u can just put a simple "view my prints" link or something, which saves bandwidth. Like i said, many people dont even look at signatures. |

That I agree with. I know I have a signature and I have bitched about photos being in signatures. I still hate looking at images in signatures either way. Nothing against no one but all you need is a link with some words I will click it if I am interested. Usually when I see images I don't click them. I am thinking about wiping my signature out all together only because we pay a membership fee not to see advertisements but other members shove advertisements down our throat and I am just as much to blame because of the charity recently.

most people who have all that ______ in their signatures want it all over the place so why would they consider being considerate and only post it once? hahaha that is why I turn signatures off!!!! If I am interested in someone further after reading their post, I click and go into their profile at my discretion. I hate being force-fed anything!! |

I personally feel that anything that's not plain text is really too much. One line of text is normally plenty -- anything more than that just gets lost in the shuffle.
But, that's my opinion. I do agree that they should be used once per thread (particularly if you have graphics). |

| In my mind graphics in signatures should be banned. I will get slammed for that but what the hell it is my opinion. |

If I want to see someone's signature, I go to their profile page, where they're listed now.

Not slammed, at least not by this post. I agree. I don't have sigs turned off but I am leaning towards that. All the graphics and pics and 'self promotion' gets really anoying and makes the threads way longer to load than they need to be. We are all already on a site promoting our work so why the need to promote further in a signature? It is only us that sees it and we know what is available and I think the people that just 'visit' the site also know what is available and how to find it if they want. Your nick already links to your profile, put the graphics and self promotion there. It is liking watching TV with endless commercials - gets old real fast.
Edit: Just turned them off - wow do threads load fast!

Personally, signatures don't bother me at all, even the larger ones. I like the way dpc has seperated them from the message being written. I don't see larger signatures a problem at all. Actually, I often enjoy taking the trips through cyberspace they offer.

Thanks everyone for your opinion. I respect everyones response that's why I was hoping to find a medium while I have my signature line up trying to help find raise money for ClubJuggles walk for MS. I have took suggestions in this thread and reduced my signature to words only [no pictures] and no more than two lines. I hope that helps [See Below]
Again thanks for your input.

I have turned the signatures off also. I will no longer show mine. You can go to my profile and see it.
It is a shame we have to turn signatures off and miss the few like Scott's that should be read. But if you have them off go to his profile. |

| I really believe that there should be a rule in the forums, in which one could only post images from their portfolios. Also images shouldn't be linked from other websites, only their url should be provided! |

I think that would be going too far, thumbs don't hinder at all if they are relevant to the topic -- this is a photography site after all, photographs should be expected. I will agree that a size limit would not be out of order though.
---
A few additional thoughts on the matter. Vertical space is at a premium on most monitors. Monitors are smaller vertically than horizontally, and is only made worse by the wide-screen format. Multiple monitors typically only make the matter worse (they're great, but this they make worse), as they extend the desktop to the left or right. Yes I know most can be used to extend the desktop in any direction, but stacking monitors to increase the vertical space is not generally done.
This physical limitation of space is compounded in web viewing by headers placed on both the web browser (titlebar, toolbar and such) and the web page itself. Frames help, but only when used effectively -- all too often a frame is in addition to the page header.
The area to the left of the post, under the name, is the best area for sigs and taglines -- it is already about the poster, not the post. Utilizing what, in a longer post, is a lot of dead space could be used to great advantage here. If anything placed in that area was made to auto-clip to not extend much more vertically than the post, it wouldn't become much of a problem.
David
