For the 20D. They cost the same.
I know the 75/300 has more range, Are there more differences?
What would you go for?

Neither,
I'd recommend the Sigma 70-300 APO II, about same price, more range, and better optically.
Check this month's Practical Photography's shoot out of the consumer zoom lenses. The Sigma won, again. A DG version with coating for digital lens is also coming out as well for this lens.

I had the 90-300, bought it in Dubai duty free. Used it three times and sold it. Way too soft, not a good lens really.
As a replacement I got the 75-300 with Image Stabalisation, a much much better lens though much more expensive.
In the end I saved up and am now the proud owner of a 100-400 IS 'L'
I really can't speak for the non IS 75-300, but I can't really recommend the 90-300

The Sigma is nice, and can be had new on ebay for under $200. The DG version should be better yet.
The other option is dig deep and go with a Canon L lens...

I've dug as deep as I can getting the 20D thanks :D
Googled the Sigma last night. Ordered it this morning.
Pickup on Saturday. Ugh four more days... |

Don't worry. If you can afford pro level lens. A good consumer lenses tend to be very very sharp. Most of the differnce is in speed (lower f value), less distortion, tougher construction.
The Sigma APO is a nice lens and will give you excellent images.
If you decide to upgrade later, you should have no problem selling it used.

You'll like that lens. Here are a few pics I grabbed yesterday with it
100% crop, some USM is all I did.
full frame shot, resized and some USM.
A little crop, a little USm, a little resize...
I did find that at full 300mm handheld I needed 1/800 to avoid camera shake and get a good steady shot. Still learning...

Thanks, I cannot wait to get my greasy little paws on mine now.
I am still very green at this whole DSLR removable lens thing. On the digicam you make do with what you've got..
Prof Fate: What ISO did you use for these shots with 1/800 handheld? If you don't mind me asking. |
