I shot with a young model this afternoon. We shot ballet motif almost exclusively. Fair warning for those who don't like dark photos - you ain't gonna like these. Went with a black background and used the lights to highlight the elements I wanted to bring out in the shots; namely, the subject's graceful and elegant neck and jawlines, the slippers and sometimes her legs. The object of this set isn't what you can't see . . . its what you do see that is meant to bring the viewer into these shots.
Without further ado:
Comments/critiques welcome.

Wow...those are really nice. Great feel of art and grace to the poses. My only nitpick is the pose and lighting in 8342 tend to highlight the ear, and the angle just isn't very flattering in that regard I think. Very nice job overall though. |

In the first one, her hand looks kinda strange, I think maybe because it was closest to the camera. Nice shots though, otherwise!

I love ballet shots and these are very good. I am wondering why you didn't post any with the dancer in her toe shoes? They usually photograph better than the leather or canvas ballet shoes. I like the lighting and your explanation makes sense.
Overall a great job! |

The last one is excellent! Such a simple photo, but such a complex expression -- wistful and assured at the same time. |

Time was running short on us and by the time we got to the toe shoes I was trying to get the shots with them on the chair back. We also got some photos of her putting the pointe (sp?) shoes on. Its a whole series of shots and I like them but I don't think I got the type of shot you might be meaning. We didn't get any in just leotard, tights and toe shoes. That's probably my own prejudice since I just don't find those shots as appealing as the practice shoes with the leotard/tights. After a shoot where a dance put on her pointe shoes with her black leotard and jeans I have been a major fan of that kind of look. It's kinda relaxed, kinda simple, kinda elegant and totally sexy with some kind of Holly Golightly innocence feeling. I can't exactly put good words to the look but I think we got close to the demurely elegant attitude in this shot
I'll try to get some more traditional shots next time I have a ballet setup. I think it would be useful for me to try producing those (perhaps with a lighter background and a bar).

You're right. My studio space is limited so even with the 24-70mm lens I still get some odd perspectives and this happens to be one. Her hand was turned flat to me (which isn't feminine most of the time as it makes the hand look larger than it might otherwise look) and it was quite a bit closer than the rest of the subject.
Thanks again for the comments,
Kev
