The Canon 20D has two Power on positions for a reason... Off is Obviously off, the Middle click of the switch is On but the Big Dial/Set button is non-functional, and the third position is on with the Big Dial/Set Button Functional.
My suggestion for 20D users would be set your gear up and shoot using the middle (on) position or you could end up having a day like I did today. Somehow I bumped the Set Button and Spun the big dial (3 clicks which I have set for b/w) and shot quite a few shots before noticing.
I don't chimp a whole lot and generally just glance at the LCD for the histogram...maybe I need to chimp a little more. I was 2/3's way through a 1Gigger when I noticed as you can guess I kind of freaked out. Come to find out all of (but only) the drag racing on the airstrip are in black and white.
Both of these are straight from cam...no crop just a resize and slight USM to take the edge off the (really big) downsize.
Some things look pretty cool in B/W
Some would look a whole lot better in color...
I did get some most excellent color shots at the Ramona Props and Rods airshow that I will work up and post in a bit.

I like b&w...although you're right, I'd like to do the conversion myself in photoshop. Well, at least you didn't ruin them...the two you posted look great in b&w

A better solution might be to simply set Custom Function 01 back to the default of "No Function". This way pressing the center button on the dial does nothing at all.
The reason I suggest this is that when the switch is set to the middle position the entire dial is deactivated, not just the center button. With the dial disabled you cannot make on the fly exposure adjustments in AV, TV or P modes. Unless you only shot in the competely automatic modes this is pretty limiting.
