Today while driving around South Fork, Colorado looking for pictures for the Leading Lines challenge I spotted a bear not too far from the road. I managed to get several nice pictures of it before it ran away. The light wasn't very good as it was quite overcast.

This is the first time I've managed to actually get a picture of a bear in the wild as they usually run away too fast if you are ever lucky enough to see one.

That is great. I was up in Rocky Mountain National Park the other day and found a great herd (is that technically right?) of elk and baby elk. I have yet to see a bear in the wilderness. That is great. Where is South Fork? Also, I am going to be down by the Great Sand Dunes next week...any suggestions of surrounding areas to check out. Thanks.

Your elk picture is really nice, Cutter. When you come to the Sand Dunes you will be very close to my home in La Jara, Colorado. There are lots of really nice places to take pictures around here depending on what sort of things you are looking for.

If you want to drive a bit you can get really nice pictures of the Cumbres Toltec Narrow Gauge train as it takes the trip between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico - that is one of my favorite summer photo opps. There are wildlife refuges near Monte Vista and Alamosa that have lots of birds and sometimes elk and deer. The one near Monte Vista has a lot of owls this year that are living in the cottonwoods just outside the refuge.

South Fork is west of Alamosa as you head up towards Wolf Creek pass. It is lovely there and the drive from there to Creede is beautiful. It is a very pretty drive from South Fork to Pagosa Spings over Wolf Creek pass and then head from Pagosa to Chama, New Mexico. From there you can go back to Antonito or head to Tierra Amarilla, MN and then drive to Tres Piedras, NM - that is an absolutely gorgeous drive.

If you let me know what sort of pictures you'd like to take I can probably think of more ideas as there are lots more interesting things around this area to photograph.
