I was at work(Wolf Camera) this morning when I got talking to an older lady who needed someone to take a bunch of pictures of her belongings for insurance purposes. So naturally I mentioned my talents and the fact that I'm a current photography student. She was overjoyed that someone besides her self could do the work for her. I then showed her a few prints that I have on the wall there and I finally got the question that I've been waiting to here but unprepared to answer, "How much is that one?". Well I hadn't even thought about it. She continued "Well, if its less than a hundred dollars, I'll buy it." So "80 bucks" popped out of mouth and that was it. Its a 10x15 print in a cheapo 20 dollar frame. Is this a good price? Afterwards I couldn't help but think I should have asked for more since she didn't even have to think about it. Oh well, my first sold print so I'm sittin on cloud nine. I wish I could post it but it is in the current fantasy world challenge. Anyways, I'm real excited but now I need to figure out how much to charge for the photo shoot. She said it would take a couple of hours and I want it to be worth my time. Any suggestions would be very, very much appreciated. Thanks ahead of time and I hope all have as good a day as I'm having:) |

Congrats on the sale. I am so waiting for that to happen. One day. Anyways as far as charging for your services. You need to take a few things into account, 1) How long will it take? 2) Who is printing the prints? 3) Do you want to charge per hour or just a figure for a complete session fee? 4) What do you feel your services are worth? 5) Have you checked other photographers in the area to see what they charge? You can just call around anonymously if you feel uncomfortable doing it any other way. HTH helps to sort things out in your head, not causes more confusion.

$80 sounds fair for your first sell in a cheapo frame. That means you got $60 for a 10x15. Not bad my friend! Keep it up :-) |

as for charging for your work, look at your last paycheck, what is your hour rate, multiply by 2 and charge that, unless you are a lawyer and your rate is $1000 pr hour ;)
just have in mind, for every hour shooting, you'll spend 3 hours post processing :)
so for a 2 hour shoot you'll be working 8 hours, so charge for that :)

Thanks for the ideas, I wouldn't have even thought about charging for all the post processing time. |
