Unfortunately, this is the nature of the beast on an open site. This is probably the very reason we have paid member only challenges. I would imagine this site goes through cyclical periods of high participation and low participation. I think the metal challenge was simply broad enough to get folks imaginations going.

I am wondering what the average number of participants is for challenges in, say the last 6 months, or year. I bet that number dives down to a somewhat acceptable level.

See I am a bit weird =) (yeah me go figure!!!). I only vote in challenges I enter. I figure I shouldnt be able to vote on something I didn't have the guts or ideas to put into a camera. So why should I vote on someone elses.

Thats just me personally and I don't feel that everyone should do that in anyway.

You can just open a JPEG directly in your browser to see what it will look like. There's no need to upload it.

I am not sure papa but would be interesting to know. I think the largest since metal would be abandonned buildings back in April and my first challenge.

Doing a screen shot, pasting, etc... that seems like a wasted effort.

That's all "mental case".... ur pic is as sharp on DPC as it is on ur pc! The colors are as vibrant and vivid on ur pc, as they are on DPC. PERIOD.

Pasting it an' stuff, might sound a wasted effort, but this way you wouldn't get complaints such as "I submitted to see how it looked, went for the door bell, and then when I came back the submition deadline was over, challenge has started"
06/23/2005 11:48:09 AM · #31
But then I would have to change the background color of my browser to match the DPC voting page. Background color can impact how the image looks...

Curious - is there additional compression that runs on submitted entries? I've noticed a difference in file size sometimes.

As for previewing and then changing my entry - it's rare that I change it after previewing, and then usually because I've changed my mind on the submission entirely.

Not that ANY of this does me any good on scoring! ;^)

if i change my image more than once - its normally cause i entered early then got a better shot ... at least i think so ... although normally my first shot probably woulda done better

Please. One time I've heard that and I don't think it was so much a complaint as it was an excuse to get some visibility. Bring out the violins...

I'm not trying to start a debate here, but it's not rare to see ppl tyring (even if it's not 100% transparent on their posts) to have their entries removed after the challenge has begun, cz they were only previewing the way their pic looks!
What's harder? Log on, than go the submtion page, load ur pic, and then see it.....or just make a larger canvas and change a background color on PS? Of course the color of the surrounding have a great deal of impact on the images, but that's y I think that a very light grey is used, so that the website layout itself, doesn't interfere on the way UR shot looks!

I think one of the reasons we get 500+ images is because people are not
"self filtering" their shots --

I.E> people are putting in any old image that has metal in it rather than the few that scream at you METAL

a boring picture may meet the challenge but why would you inflict that on other people ?

there are several subjects that are repeated in the challenge but few (if any) are interestingly "M E T A L" for that subject
so filter filter filter - & don't submit anything that is 'JUST good enought' to meet the challenge ..

I guess I am feeling the same way.. I really love the fun of finding a picture, doing the edits, if needed and putting it out there for all the world to see. Then the getting the crap kicked out of you by someone who "doesn't" get it. WHAT IS IT THAT YOU DON'T GET PEOPLE???? I know when there are 500 pictures it take a lot of time to make a comment but please please if you are taking them time to comment, take another second to explain what it is that bothers you.
Now don't everyone wait until the challenges are over to see who said what.. this is not directed at anyone or any challenge just a general comment..
I joined the critique club because it helped me hone my skills as a photographer, I have learned a lot about looking at the pictures instead of doing a fast scan and click. I never vote on a picture the first time through. My thoughts are if you have taken the time to take the picture, edit and post it, then a few minutes of my time to judge it fairly is just common sense.

Frustrated in Virginia...

or maybe there are 500+ entries because it was a wide open topic that most everyone could "get their arms around." Almost an open topic, if you ask me!

Put my vote in for the following:

- Limit entries to 300. (Have more challenges if necessary)
- Once an entry is submitted, it cannot be replaced

I can't believe comments like "What about people like me who wait until the last minute or change their mind all the time or am too busy not to have the site bend to my hectic schedule and if I am rushed, I'll just submit crappy photos that I didn't think about."

Geez - it seems quite simple - a deadline and all entries final and limited number of submissions.

ps - hate to post & run, but have to go so can't respond to all the torch-wielding villagers who respond to this post. ;-)

I was going to vote on that challenge, but when I saw the numbers of entries I decided not to vote.
I try to give a good comment with all my votes, say what I like and what I think could be done better, but 20% in that challenge means over 100 comments, I just don't have the time for that, and after looking through the thumbnails I only saw 7 pictures that I really liked, so I would have made 95 "bad picture" comments.. I'm not ready for a pm war ;)

I upload mine sometimes to see how they will look on DPC too. Because I want to see what it will look like with the 1-10 and the title and where the title sits in relation to the 1-10 and how the border looks on the background and with the extra 1-pixel border that is automatically drawn around the entries. Too much wasted time and effort to copy/paste this into ps then blah blah

As far as the number of entries...I say we just start being really rude to the new people and then they won't come back.

Exactly what I do, I want to see the overall presentation. I'll often change my border and/or my title to make it all "look right"

How about the idea of dropping closing dates for a challenge? Once there are 200 entries the voting process automatically starts, if you submit a pic and then change it you lose your place. Initially there will be a rush and a drop in quality, but this can be addressed by having two or more contests open at all times. Once people are settled then the initial rush will go and people will pick and choose the contests they want to enter.

Another idea would be to split members into divisions based on their average vote recieved, this could be done as a percentage i.e. in the case of 4 divisions there would be 25% splits so that when people post their entry they are automatically entered into the correct division, could even say that a member has to vote on their own division before voting on another, or even that a member cannot vote on their on division.

Just ideas, personally I am not interested in challenges that go over 250 entries.

Mr. Priest, It annoys me to read your posts when we both know full well that you should be spending this time working on the DPC Enquirer.

I think this is a REALLY poor idea. Not to be able to compete against the "big guns" on a level footing. Someone like me, as a ready-to-hand example, who has a very low votes-received average not because he's a poor photographer but because he doesn't make his images to pander to the DPC masses, would feel a little slighted to be relegated to "second-tier" challenges as a result of artistic independence. I'd stop participating if this became reality.

Ahem - So you've never submitted a 'boring' picture? It's all subjective - outstanding to you may be boring to me and vice-versa.

I think the majority of people that enter an open challenge have a connection to their entry - good, bad, or indifferent - THEY think it's a good one. Heck, it might even WIN! ;^)

Response to initial posting in this thread:

DustDevil - Not trying to give you a hard time...I'm wondering, at what point do you decide NOT to enter? If it's an open challenge and you post your entry when there's 150 already in...are you going to pull (unsubmit) your entry when the number of entries hits (300...350, etc.) ???
