I learned my lesson the hard way. Will not go into a 500+ open challenge again. I just do not think 80% of the entries get a fair shake.

sadly, you are far from the only person who feels that way.
i agree that 500+ challenge entries are just much more of a deterrent than they are fun... once it hits 300 or so i completely lose interest. |

I've felt your pain in previous open challenges and as much as I would have loved to enter into the metal challenge, I just couldn't bring myself to do it... well, that and the fact that I didn't take any pictures for it. ;-)
And now that I see the number of entries, I'm glad I didn't go breaking my back trying to get one in.

To me it is not the scores.....I get scored low as an average and I think that is what they deserve. Its more the fact it just not a fair process on the large open entries. I can understand voting low...or lumping alot of entries into the "5" zone. But it shouldn't have to be that way.

400 is pushing it, 500 is simply unreasonalble. This is one of the aspects of voting that should be amended IMO. |

Why not but a stopping point on a challenge? I think that 300 entries is plenty! After that I get sick of voting. It is not even fun anymore after that many. Just put a cap on the open challenges, the member challenges don't seem to be so bad. |

ya know ... here is an idea .. maybe if an open challenge is reaching - let's say 350 or so .. drew and langdon can throw in a "48 hour" challenge or what ever the remaining time would be for a big number of entries in the open challenge ...
then it would be another benifit for being a member ... may spark more interest and keep people involved ....
my 2 cents

Well I think caps the problem is people put a temp entry in....to just hold their spot. And as to 24 hour cahllenges i think they are more random than planned. From what I have heard the SC does not even know when they will happen.

That's easy enough to fix. Let's just say, once you enter, you're in for good. No changing entries once they've been entered. What's wrong with that?? It's not like you get a second chance to enter into a juried competition. That would take care of that problem. People will just have to work on their photos and get it the way they want it before they enter it. Not such a big deal, I don't think.

I really don't see a reason for that! How many paid members do we have on the site as well? I'm pretty sure it's a whole lot more than 500. It depends on the challenge, but also the "member's challenge" can get as many entries as the open ones! |

I see what everyone is saying. It is tough to vote when there are so many. Tough to get noticed even. But, if there is a cap on entries. Then the lucky few that get an idea early will be fine. But, people like myself that need to roll the idea around for a few days might get shut out.

well ya i know .. so maybe it would be at random as they are now .... just more often if the open entries end up being huge ...
as for - youre in, youre in, i dont like that ... sometimes i'll submit a photo then change it cause i dont like the way it looks in the submitting window

Than there will be no reason for a 7 day period for the sumbissions!
I think that limiting the number of entries wouldn't do any good!
It'll just prevent some user from sending really descent pics! If that does happen, a limit to entries, ppl will rush to get their photos, and won't think of the pic itself, but just account for the fact that they have made into the lucky "100s" that managed to submit it! |

I do not think it is a big deal just that it will and would not happen.

I like the semi-cap idea. Maybe after 300 is reached, only members can enter. And as for the place-holding issue, some people (like myself) submit the photo first to see how it would look on DPC; so how about letting people resubmit within say 2 hours of their original submission? I'd like to know what are the chances of rules like this actually going into effect; any SC around? |

Pretty slim judging from numerous past discussions on the same topic. |

I don't get this, how does the pic's look differ from your PC to the DPC window? Isn't it the same picture!?
There are easier ways, such as, take a screen shot of DPC, when previewing ur submission, and then past ur shot on top of that! Still I don't think that you get a diff idea of ur pic, from it being on dpc, or on ur hard drive, when visualizing it with ur image editing program! |

I think alot of this type of stuff has been talked about before...caps...breaking challenges into 2 parts...more member challenges...more non member ones.
I am not complaining about the site at all. Seeing how I just feel it is a problem and I just choose not to participate in it is the surest way for it to work for myself. Could and probrably would be months for a change if it was even to be changed.

I usually preview mine as well. There have been times when the image looks a bit different - sharper, etc...
Doing a screen shot, pasting, etc... that seems like a wasted effort.

Yeah, well I'm not really for caps either. I was just playing devils advocate. :-) I do the same as you and choose not to enter. Now, if I ever came up with that Ribbon winner for an open challenge, I might change my mind (hasn't happened so far in ANY challenge type so not really an issue in my case) The thing that makes me sad, is how many great photos I miss because I'm too put off by the large numbers to go through them. But that's just me being lazy, I suppose. :-)
