I have a two part question: 1} Are gradients legal in advanced editing rules (I assume they are not allowed in basic editing}. 2} Do you know of a good tutorial on how to effectively use layer masks. I have never been good at them, but I believe they are a valuable tool. Thanks.

It depends on what you are going to do with them. If you replace the background with a gradient then I believe that could be illegal because you are removing a major element. If you are using a gradient mask then that should be legal.

Could you tell me how you do a gradient mask.

Masks are a form of selection and hence illegal for basic editing. They are allowed for advanced editing though, helping you to apply adjustments to certain areas only.
I use Paint Shop Pro, this is how I would create a gradient mask:
Layers, mask, new mask, hide all, use fill tool, set to gradient, fade from black to wide in the desired mode (linear, radial, ...)
