Lately I've had the need to share large amounts of photos, and have found that serverway has received good reviews (including one that I found on a forum search here) and has fantastic prices. I love the layout of some photo blogs that I've encountered:

daily dose of imagery
chromasia
ground glass
heather champ
smudo

among others.. it seems that all of those that i've encountered, that actually mentuion what programs they use, mention movable type - does anybody have experience with this? I've been looking into it, but it still does not seem very intuitive to me.

The main thing that I like about these sites is the 1 photo per page presentation style, also allowing previous/next updates. This shouldn't be very hard to even do manually, but am curious if anybody has something similar set up. I'd also look into getting a different style gallery for sharing albums - but would like this kind of layout for my 'front page' or for my personal photo blog..

I hope that all made sense.. I'm just looking for some feedback and/or advice regarding tackling this issue/task.. I have access to dreamweaver on campus, and movable type has a free version for personal use (w/o support).

edit to add: I know about pbase and most of the other online storage/photo sharing sites, but really would prefer (for about the same cost, minus some storage and plus some work) a layout more similar to these sites, including the format of links, the comments, etc.

Can't really answer your question, but thought I would comment about Movable Type. I love it!

It is what I use, but I don't have image gallery attached to it. *laughs* I actually use PBase for my gallery. However, after I finish up my currect class and before my next class starts (web designers are perpetual students), I do plan on setting up a gallery via MT.

I will be using a plugin though, have not decided yet which one.

Thought I would share the link though to them:

SixApart

(They are the company that makes MT)

So is this the best/easiest way to do this? I think I remember one of them citing that they used Embed Image, but the description of it on there doesn't really help me much..

and I'm still a bit confused about how MT works - so it's some sort of MySQL DB on the server.. but how do we "run" it and modify things? Or is it all via coding, with no interface? Do you use Dreamweaver, or anything else - or is movable type pretty much all you need in order to run your blog?

Thanks,
Brian

My personal experience with MT is that while it's very powerful with quite a bit of functionality, it's a pain in the rear to install. There is an interface, once you've installed. It essentially works like other web services work where you sign in and dink around in text boxes/uploads and then hit save. You might use dreamweaver to create a new template but once you've got that set up, you don't really need anything else.

doh! i thought the only 'install' was uploading it. i guess i'm not very well versed in this stuff - will have to read more on it. thanks for the info you two :)

I finally ended up going with pixelpost, which was very easy to set up once I got the domain+hosting. A simple upload and follow some instructions and you're up and running.
It comes with a few templates, but I chose to go with another template that is on their site (as opposed to making my own, since I don't feel like I know enough yet to do so). I'd recommend it to anybody that is considering starting a photo blog on their own (as opposed to with services like buzznet, pbase, or whatever else).

Here is the final product:
funktif[eye] photo blog

It allows for archives w/ categories, comments, ratings, random photos, etc.. I suppose not much different than some other options - but the true beauty is in the customization and ability to have several pages. The administration is web-based very easy to use.
