I have no idea either! It's only 1 pin that is bent and it is right in the middle. Really strange!

In the middle is even stranger. I assumed it was an edge/corner since they are the most common in computers to get bent.
I was told to get bent once, what does that mean? I got drunk - figured that was about as bent as I could get. |

Oh and from years of experience with connectors with pins, straightening them out will ALMOST ALWAYS break them. Not 100%, but close. And if you do happen to get it straight, it is then weaker and will bend again all the more easily. |

Try inserting your card backwards. I've seen it done to a E-300. |

we used to use those thin lead pens that take 0.5mm pencil leads to straighten the pins on CPU's Im sure if you could get something similar to this but obviously longer it would work fine for you.. A long thin tube like object then use it to bend the pin back.. tricky huh?.. |

Trouble is I pushed my card all the way in and the pin is flat against the bottom. I've tried long tweasers but they cant get a grip on it :(

Canon EOS Rebel
Problem:
Won't turn on, reads EOS in the small lcd but then turns off. Happen when I click on the flash button while it was still powering on but I know this is getting old aswell and should had pick up a thing or two from others feedback but I have a slightly different situation. I notice that the Pins on my CF Reader have two missing diagram below:
x = broken pins
x........................
........................x
I found the the two missing pins that had broken off embedded in the CF Card but I knew right their it wasn't repairable to reuse, my scenario is that this camera was given by a friend at a pawn shop. Any clue on the cost to get it repaired? Could be this the problem why it won't power on?
I try the following, I cleaned the lens contact sensor and the battery's contact sensors as well, reconnected the lens and it powered on and display to enter the time and date but after i reinsert the CF Card it reads on the smaller lcd EOS then shuts off again.

Modelling shops sell very thin brass tubing for models. if you are lucky you can slip the tube over the bent pin and lever it up. I used to use those tiny refil lead pencils to fix bent pins on motherboards but you wont get a pen in that slot so check out the store for a small lengh of 0.7mm piping that will do it.
Good luck

well, actually problem is those two broke off meaning not attached anymore to the CF board, any advice? Looking for another route that doesn't involved sending it to Canon since I don't have warranty if you've read the above. Although if it does involve sending it to Canon then let it be, any idea on the cost?

I have had a similar problem but there is only one Bent pin on my Camera same type EOS 300D but if I Turn on the camera it will come on fine and allow me to take one shot at a time with No CF card in the Slot but when I turn the Camera on with the CF card in the slot the Camera will say EOS in the LCD Display and that̢۪s it then it crashes just stuck saying EOS even when I switch the Camera off EOS stays in the LCD display it was very frustrating finding out what the problem was I found that one of the pins was Bent Flat to the plastic but it is touching 2 of its neighboring pins so I think that is why it wont work with the CF card in I hope this helps you in some way I am looking for places to send it for repair do you know anywhere it is out of warranty |

Thats why SD memory is better. They dont have this problem. This is more common of a problem then you think. Sucks when you have a $2,000. machine and a little 10 cent strip of metal ruins it.
They can break and being in the corner it might be a little more tricky.
If i were you i would sell the smaller cards you have and get one big one and dont remove it. You run a huge risk pulling them in and out.
What they should of done was put the pins in the memory card and not on the camera. Then you just have to replace the memory or you can work on it outside the camera. Little more R&D

same here. tried unbending the pins with a small screwdriver, which seemed to work, but pins now really distorted. Rest of camera seems to work in all respects. Just can't save or store images, so effectively useless. I guess not economically repairable as its a EOS 300D and 4 yrs old. Why does canon use CF?? |

I suppose this is part of the reason why Canon is supposedly switching to SD cards with the 60D. Not only are they much smaller, but no more bent pins to worry about.

Is SD capable of UDMA speeds though? |

My niece straightened out one on her Canon in about 30 sec with a small sharp pair of tweezers. It was bent almost flat to the bottom. To get one up from the bottom, you may try a piece of fishing leader wire bent into a sharp U.
If it is bent, and not working, it will not be taking a chance on any damage to try to straighten the pin yourself.
I have noticed that it is possible to incorrectly insert the CF card into my S3 Fuji, so I have been very careful to get the cards oriented exactly, and have learned to feel if the insert is going right. The S3 also has an XD card slot, which makes me feel a lot more secure about the issue of a bent pin possibility.

careful about re-straightening the pins though.
if it snaps off, it'd be troublesome |

I used to build computers for a living. I would never advise an end user to re-bend any pins. When I received calls like that I had them bring the compute in for maintenance. In that time period I would send the part in..... There is too much of a risk in breaking the pin off. That really sux....If the camera is not under warranty it can get expensive.....If it is under warranty....hell just send it in... I hope I have been a little helpful.
