I almost stepped on this snake. I went for an early morning walk in the Bolsa Chica Wetlands and it was on the trail. I am wondering if it might be a rattle snake. I didn't see a rattle, but the coloring looks like the Pacific rattle snake. It also looked thinner than the ones I saw online so maybe it is young and will get a rattle later. Or maybe it is something else. Any snake experts out there?

That is probably a sub-species of a gopher snake called a Bullsnake. Nothing to worry about, although sometimes they can look aggressive. They can grow pretty big, 8 feet or so. I used to catch them when I was a kid.

Zippy - its a garter snake - checked garter would be my guess (i breed eastern garters - i used 2 of them in the old/young challenge if youd like to see)

try this site www.thamnophis.com for more info.

Edit to add: Non venomous to humans, not ready bites (you have to mess with them before they mess with you), not kin to rattlers so please DO NOT KILL ONE IF YOU SEE IT!!! and that is a full grown adult female by the size of her.

I agree with Telehubbie's assessment. It looks like a gopher snake. They're usually pretty docile.

Here is a closup of a gopher snake I encountered a couple weeks back:

If your snake looked like that close up then gopher is what it is. They get big and are the largest snake in Arizona where I live.

Why did the snake cross the road?
