I am just trying to learn photoshop, so forgive stupid questions.
If you crop and image, how do you get it to a size that is standard again so it will print normally. Do you have to crop it to standard size to begin with?

You can add a border to bring it back to a standard size.

cropping in the standard ratio from the satar is I think the best way to do. Adding a border can do the job but you'll end with a border that will be uneven on all side. I suggest you decide wich size of print you want to do at first. then you crop it with crop tools using the fixed aspect-ratio mode (above the picture near the center of the screen. If you have an horizontal shot that you want printed as a 8x10 you can either enter 10 for width and 8 for height or 5 for width and 4 for height, then you crop you will have a picture that perfectly fit a 8x10. Try to crop as little as you can because each pixel you crop is definition lost when it's time to print big. if possible, the only cropping should be done in order to get the suitable ratio for your print and not to recompose the image. I think that's it for what I know about cropping.

It's not the crop tools but the selection tools and when you have selected the portion you want to keep then you go to edit/crop
