Hi,
I am trying to break into portrait photography. I have little money. I bought two smith vector hotlights that are 500 watts each (well, the BULBS are 500 watts.) I also bought two softboxes for over the lights, a background stand and a background. (white for now). I have enough money for one more light and I have heard two different ideas. Someone said get a backlight and someone said a hair light. My question is this:
1. is a backlight pointed at the background? How far off the ground should it be? How many watts should it be?
2. For a hair light, how many watts should that be? Should it also have a softbox over it?
Any other suggestions? |

for background lights i wouldnt get anything more than 600, i use a 600 for my background lights, and it works fine. invest in a background stand they stand about 1.5 feet off the ground which is decent, unless you like to use phone books instead.
rim lights, ive done a few of those, here is an example of one ive done
those were taken with a softbox over it, they really add a nice effect to the picture, 500 is good for portraits |
