I came upon this fellow today. Does anyone know what it is? (I have already determined that it is indeed a snake.)

I live in Oklahoma City if that is of any use to anyone.

Wow, my wife would flip out if she saw a snake like that by our house. She'd definitely have us moving. Nice shot!

Seems to me that anyone who can tolerate Slippy could also handle Slithery. ;-)

I may move myself!

I live about 2 1/2 miles north from downtown OKC and have been here for nearly seven years. This is only the second time that I have seen a snake near my house. The other was last summer and the fellow was meandering up my drive way from the street.

i think that guy looks great in that neon glow pink shirt...

nonvenomous doesn't mean they don't hurt when they bite... i've been biten by a few large water snakes, and it hurts !

we used to wrangle them when we were kids.

Looks like a gopher snake to me! We have a lot of them here in Colorado.

Thanks. It may be a gopher snake. However, it does seem to resemble more a water snake as has been suggested.

The snake is not a water snake. It may be a transplant. It looks like a Gray Rat Snake. The markings on the head and the patterns are identicle to Rat Snakes I have handled. Rat Snakes have many variations in color and markings.

Here you can access list of some if not all snakes from North America
//www.pitt.edu/~mcs2/herp/SoNA.html

I personally thought it could be a watersnake from the photos on this site check out the Diamondback Water Snake and the Nothern Water Snake. The colors arent exact but the markings seem to be similar. I can't quite tell from the photos....

No, no, you are all wrong :o)

As an old man I knew in Lubbock used to say, they're all "copper headed water rattlers" and poison as hell. MOVE!

Well, when all the folks that live where there are poisonous snakes up and move.... do let me know.... I always wanted to own a home in some southern state. If they decided to all move at the same time,, I bet the prices would be real low.....hehehehehehe.

Seriously, I don't know what to tell you. A lot of the folks that live in the south seem to suggest it is a poisonous snake, and since they live there and are more familiar with your local variety of snakes, they may be right. All I can tell you is that if I saw a snake of that description where I live, I would not hesitate to try and pick it up, as I believe it to be a water snake.

To be on the safe side, take pics of it from a distance.

My neighbor told me that all snakes are cobras. Your old man and my neighbor might be related.
