OK,

this is where the language of challenges need to be tightened up as I have mentioned in a web sight suggestion.

the discription of the "metal" challenge is as stated:

If it's made of metal (you know, usually shiny, good conductor of heat and electricity), you can photograph it for this challenge. Whatever metal object(s) you use should be the primary subject. There is a lot of metal in the world, so the key here is being creative.

So, the issue is this....

metal is not always "shiny". Metal can degrade. It can rust, it can turn color, it does stuff that mother nature loves to do that man has not control over.

SOOOOO, is this a challenge on just "shiny" metal, or is it a challenge on all types of metal.

It says, "usually shiny", which suggests that its not necessarily shiny...

Yeah it says "usually", but how many memebers will remember that word, and how many will remember "shiny"?

The "Naturally Framed" challenge had the same issue when not discribing what was meant by naturally.

Wow, is it just me or is there an unusually large numbers of these types of threads floating about lately. For mine I don't think there's really any ambiguity about this challenge. It's about as straightforward as they get - take a picture of something metal.

I'm gonna use a rusted out object despite the "usually shiney" part. As I said in another thread I think the description of this topic SUCKS and should be re-worded.

I agree with Anders. There's no way to make it any more clearer. Metal. It's as simple as that.

I think the wording is just fine (and I appreciate the sense of humor injected). All that means is it will be interpreted more widely by more people which promotes variety. Or narrowly by more and thus making my larger interpretation more unique.

Relax. Remember, this is supposed to be fun. :-)

And the challenge should have been a week earlier!

Grmmbbbll, I was in a sandwichpanel factory last week. 10.000.000kg of coils (metal on a roll) in stock and all the manufacturing lines in full operation. :(

How about coated metal or painted metal.
A steam engine made out of 60.000kg metal for example.
The structure of a building.
Stuff like that.

yeah, and what about alloys? That only needs to be one part metal. Do you think that will affect my score?

Yes, I will vote alloys a 3 if everything else in the picture is outstanding, if not, i will vote them a 1 because there are no 0s.

Let this serve as a reminder to those who suggest challenges- take the time to think about your description. :)

You never know if yours will be selected.

I think that shiny metal may well score better than metal that is disguised by paint, rust or some other factor. I think that is because metal implies metallic. Not saying that is right, but I think it may reflect some voter's views. Eg -

Metal:

Comment: Wow - this is really mettalic.

Painted Metal:

Comment: How do I know this is metal, and not something else?

METAL is METAL whether molten, dull, shiney, rusted, painted, bent, straight, crumpled.... OR with other things like rubber, paint, wood

if the mentality that it only has to be shiny metal prevails... there goes the beautiful car shots (cant do that... its painted metal)... or the majestic towers of some of the most beautiful bridges (rusty, AND painted)... orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr shall I go on??

If you're photographing cars just don't use a Saturn as your subject. We all know they're made of plastic. ;oP
