Have any aussies bought any camera equipment from ebay? Can you recommend a decent seller? I would rather buy something from someone that can be recommended.
I have been looking and looking. I have found some decent sounding ones but wonder if anyone has had good/bad dealings with any inparticular.
I am after a 300/350D. They just seem to be better value online than in the shops.
Thanks Lisa

or is it possible to buy it overseas (say america), and get it posted to my penpal in virginia, then she posts it to me to save on GST and import duties? If she classes it as a gift is that how i get around it?
I will have about $1200 in about a month and i am doing ALOT of research to try and get a DSLR.
Any hints??

Try these sites. If you end up getting your pen pal to ship it to you, send it as a gift. Remember that there may be warranty issues with getting a camera overseas too.

These sites are good for reviews and places to buy...

LOL, waiting to see how much he wants for it. Thanks for the links though, they are cheap arent they. I also have to work out what it would be after conversion.

Hey Lisa... i bought my kodak off ebay last year without any probs, then this year i was buying a 20D off a guy that had only used it 'briefly'...well it was a horror story, he only wanted $1400.00 for it, and i should've known then alarm bells where ringing, after 3 weeks and countless emails ( he always replyed but insisted it was on it's way)it never showeed up.... anyway, i checked him out and found out some 'stuff' about him, and used it against him, i also told him my dad was a cop and that i will not rest until i either got the camera or my money back.... i ended up with my money back - thank goodness- !!! but in the meantime of waiting for the supposed camera i bought two lenses, without a hitch, they both arrived within three days.... no problem at all... i have also just bought a fisheye lens from america and it should arrive here in the next two weeks...all three lenses are from ebay...... i'll let you know how it goes....
another thing... i bought my camera at Harvey Norman in the end , brand new, they sent it to canon for me two weeks ago for a service and clean.... and it was going to be 4 weeks...!!!!! ..THEN when i rang last week, it's now going to be 6 weeks.. and i bet that will rise over time... gosh i could end up going 8 or more weeks without it... what a load of crap.... so i rang them last week and told them how ridiculas i thought this was and to send it back 'uncleaned and unserviced'....so it now seems impossible to ever be able to get my camera seviced or cleaned by a professional...... just something to keep in mind if you buy a canon... you will be without it for at least 6 weeks come clean time and service time... something i now regret buying a canon, canon told me this is normal for them... they are apparently flat chat... makes you wonder why they are so busy doing serivice work.....!!!! my girlfriend has a pentax and hers was only 10 days gone...if i had my time over i would go with either the pentax or the olympus e300... same price as the 300D new....

I bought my Nikon D70 from Bond and Bond after going around and getting the best deal pricewise and financewise. You will be surprised how much you can negotiate with them if your prepared to do the foot work. I had a problem with the lens, and the camera and lens was shipped back to me within 5 days, cleaned, serviced and repaired. I Would have a problem if I bought it from a direct importer, so the extra money buying from a reputable firm is piece of mind. Oh yes, and make sure you have done your homework and know what you want, because the sales people at these places don't usually know anything about the product!

wow kelly, you have had a bad run. I really like canon. They are the camera i have always used till recently. The main reason i wanted to go with a canon DSLR is because i have an slr with a couple of lenses and i thought i could use them instead of them just sitting there. I have no problem with going with a Nikon like a D70, just thought i would be a waste not using the other canon lenses

sorry lisa.. didn't mean litterallly to go with nikon...lol.. yes i fully understand what you mean about lenses, just suss it out though as apparently some of the older lenses may not go with the new canon DSLR's... not sure which ones... someone here will know...
Just wanted to let you know my story, as i would hate for you to go through what i just been through.....i just had harvery norman on the phone , canon is know telling them, the slight prob i had with the viewfinder ( scatches on the inside) is not a manufacture problem.... i knew this would happen when i said i wanted it back..i obvioulsy ruffled someones feathers down there.... . can't see how i could get scratches on the inside of the viewfinder... now they will lump the bill onto me, and it still hasn't been cleaned or serviced....DOH...!!!! i didn't spend $3000.00 only 4 months ago to have this happen so soon....

that sucks kelly. What are you going to do? Can you ring fair trading?

My lenses are fine, they are EF, so they will work. I really would rather go with canon, but i am very open minded about it all.

thanks lis... i really don't think anything can be done with such a big company like that.....i will see more into it though.... hopefully i can get onto 'someone' at canon that knows exactly what is happening, every person you talk to says it is not their department.... the usual... just gets you madder and madder, and realistically they don't care that i am with out my camera.....

that is just so bad, maybe threaten to take them to a current affair or something like that if they dont fix the situation. It seems to me that they are treating you very unfairly.

Hey - if you want to avoid ebay - you can get some very good prices from digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au thats where I got my camera - perfectly reputable - and pretty cheap too. You can get an istDS body only for 967 australian dollars or a rebel xt for 1699 from them.

thanks anders i will check it out

im in the middle of discussions with a lady from canon, as we speak, seems there's been a huge miscommunication ( always the way ) between, me, harvey norman and canon. Canon said that i should've stated i am using it professionally. Although i told harvey norman when i originaly took it in that i needed it back asap, they told me that there was nothing they could do about that, i just had to wait, but if they had 've told canon that i needed it asap, they would've had the turnaround a lot faster...
geez louise, the old saying 'If you want something done do it yourself' may just become my new motto....!!!
UPDATE:... it's looking good.... HUGE problem with Harvery Norman Tech's not getting back to me apparently, canon doesn't seem to be at fault at all.....

CANON ARE WONDERFUL... so sorry for all the nasty names i called you under my breath.... Lisa, they honsetly couldn't have been more helpful, but if it wasn't for my 'new' motto.. If you want something done , do it yourself'... i wouldve gone on thinking that it was their fault.......they have already fixed the problem... in under 2 hours... and not only that, under the circumstances they are cleaning, servicing and replacing the scratched viewfinder for me and having it sent back today.... YAH..!!!!! i can resume with my work.....!!!!!! which on the down side means i won't be sitting here as often....lol..... but yes , by the weekend my beloved 'Daisy' will be back in my hands once more... two weeks is just too long to not see her and shoot with her..... AHHHHH their really is a photography God....

Hey Lentil

There's also these guys - Dirt cheap cameras

I've never dealt with them - but they sell the xt for $1638.

If money is an issue - I'd definately look at the pentax istDS with the sigma 18-125 for 1200 bucks from the digital camera warehouse place - that way you get a much better lens with greater range for 450 dollars less, if your happy to spend enough for the xt then I'd definately go that route.
