Here are three shots of flowers I took with my Tamron 200-500 lens when hunting birds. They are a bit soft so I decided to play with the colored pencil filter in my software. The second of each is the filtered version. What do you think? Art or gimmic?

| I think it depends on where you are planning to use them. I don't think I'd print out the colored pencil ones and hang them on my wall, however I might consider them as a computer wallpaper or something. I feel that way about most "artistic filters" though. |

You're bound to get a wide variety of opinions on this.
I like the filters very much, and in fact, know an "artist" who started doing photography as a hobby and started doing filters on her photos and they are selling VERY WELL at a gallery. (She mats and frames them as if they were artwork, but her description of the work, for buyers, is very clear that it is a digitally manipulated photo.) |

I like these really well. I like it better on the 2nd and 3rd one better than the first.

i think are rally pretty yhey really seem like a painting...
I like the last one best.. very nicely done.

I printed out the photos that I ran through the colored pencil filter and they are clearly nicer shots. Maybe not for the wall but certainly for card stock. Although I do not sell I think I find these more appealing and will start using more of it for notecards.
As a side note, although you can get away with a softer picture you still need to have a good composition to have them come out looking well. Seems like a way to salvage borderline shots.
