I love the new user profile page. Especially the sortable table headings for both challenge and portfolio tables.
But, those tables could be a little more efficiently laid out. I have a few suggestions for reclaiming space:
1. Arrows
Right now, the arrows that are clicked to sort the table, and that are used to indicate sort direction, are laid out side by side in the table heading. This uses valuable horizontal space in an already crowded table. Could the arrows instead be:
a) laid out vertically (potentially requiring the table header to be slightly taller).
b) only show the current sort order with one arrow. Any click on the arrow and/or title would reverse the sort order and show the appropriate (new sort order) arrow. I actually think this is the better option of the two because it is the most intuitive method of table re-sort (clicking on the title of a column).
2. Title column width
The title column seems to be the ugly stepchild in the table. Getting its share of space only after all other columns are satisfied. Is there any way to increase the automatic title column width resize to prefer title column width at the expense of the challenge name column?
3. Date
I'm pretty sure DPC hasn't been around since the turn of the century. Although it may last for more than 100 years, could the date field be shortened to only show the last two digits? This would save a little more space (for the constrained title column). And, while it does create some difficulty for the future, (Y2.1K problem) I don't think it would be too confusing to use for 90+ years to come.
4. Abbreviate the Comments title
I don't know with what, but it would also give a little extra space to the title column. Especially since the column usually is only going to show 1-2 digit numbers. Comms. Cmts. Cmmts?
Given the desire to maintain screen compatibility with the lowest common denominator (1024x768) all of these changes would make looking at user profiles much nicer at that resolution.
Sorry if these suggestions have already been made.
Thanks,
Ara

Thanks, Skip!
Can I get a "It's on the list." or a "Stop bothering us." from an admin or SC member? |

As it's related I hope you don't mind me adding the following ...
Is it a good idea to highlight DQ'ed entries with a big red line? It really draws attention to it and almost makes me want to get one myself! In fact my current entry isn't going to win, and I'd like lots of people to look at it, so ... ; )
Personally I think a different symbol in the ribbons/stars/arrows column would be enough to show the difference.

Comments was originally abbreviated to Cmnts but with the font used a brief glance out the corner of your eye made it look rather rude!

The other problem with the DQs (unless this has changed) is they sort above ribbons. Shouldn't they fall below a user's lowest place entry instead of being highlighted above their best? |

So, any chance these changes might get implemented? |
