...what makes the best choice for different subject matters: Color, Sepia, B&W, Selective Desat.
I struggled with what version to use. Any feedback please on the choices and or decision made. What would you have done? Why? ;^)
The B&W version (resized only) didn't excite me so I didn't bother doing any post-processing work.
The color version (resized only) was a bit dull. Overcast skies. No pop.
I liked the sepia and had it posted for the challenge until almost the end. Thought the 'destination' was not evident enough and got lost.
As entered.

I like this one best Barry:
In the B/W and the Sepia version, the plant life just gets lost in everything going on in the shot. the color version, the green is fighting for all the attention, but it isn't as interesting as the stonework and the focus is pulled from the subject.
The desaturated version has softened the plant life and incorporated it with the stonework. Neither overpowers the other and the details are much easier to view on both the plant and the stonework. (Making this on my favorite of the set).
It's a cool shot. |

Actually Barry, I like the full color one the best:
There might be some things you can do to make it 'pop'
In the one entered, the colors seem to blend into the gray stone or at least not stand out much because the tones are so close.
My 2 cents. :)

I like the black and white idea, but it is lacking in black blacks and white whites. Some work on the contrast might help improve the mood and make it a more crisp B&W image.
edit - I meant to add, it might exite you a bit more for the B&W image.

Ok - 1 for Desat, 1 for Color, and 1 for B/W. Any takers for Sepia? ;^)
Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated!

I like the sepia toned image as it seems to show more contrast than the BW and sets a nostalgic mood. |

Thanks. The Sepia and Desat versions were post-processed, therefore the additional contrast and cleaner look. The Color and B/W are as is out of the camera.
The Sepia version had the following steps applied in post-processing:
Brightness & Contrast: Histogram (10, 1, 210)
Brightness & Contrast: Clarify +2
Brightness & Contrast: B+2, C+10
Sharpness: USM (1,100,0)
Brightness & Contrast: HMS (0, 0, -10)
Crop
Resize
Sharpness: USM (.60,50,5)
Border
Save as JPG

I like the color and desat versions best. For the challenge, I think the desat was the right choice, for the reasons that Gringo gave (stone structure being too interesting and fighting for the framed subject). Outside the challenge, it's a tough call, particularly after you process the color version.

Barry, I picked my favorite from the versions you presented.
I think if you were to take the desaturated version and add just a small percentage of the natural stone color back into the stone.... you would have a the best of the bunch. Almost color. (just a thought)
