I can't find anything in my manual about how to do long exposures with my 5700. Any users out there give me any hints? I can get just about everything else, but that one is escaping me. any help will be appreciated, and I'll dedicate all my future ribbons to you (when I finally win one , of course):)

thanks,
Pedro

are you talking about the bulb setting? with the mode button set it to manual... use the wheel on top of the camera to set shutter (to bulb) and aperture - to switch between shutter and aperture you hit the mode button... you can set the max length for bulb in the shooting menu 2 - exp. Hope this helps!

I was more referring to extended exposures...5 secs+ etc. maybe it just can't be done on this camera. The automatic modes on these things are so good I never seem to get around to learning the manual functions. thanks for the tip though. PM

As photogirl has posted, you can use the bulb setting to open the shutter as long as you like up to 5 minutes. This is best done if you have the shutter release, and a watch of course. I haven't played with the shutter release much yet (but with the nightly storms starting around here I am). As far as I know on the shutter release YOU have to hold the button down. I know it can be programmed to take interval pics, but have not come across anything that states programming in your own shutter speed. Let me recheck that stuff.

Yep, you have to hold the shutter down and the shutter is pretty sensitive, for my Gold Blend shot I used bulb and it took loads of attempts to get the right exposure. Since then I have got a remote shutter release, makes life much easier and I recommned it!

A little more on this. Per Natasha, gotta hold it, but there are ways to get around it (not DPC legal), by doing interval shots and layering them. Great show here (is a movie) Nikon 5700

I bought mine on EBay (like everything else I own). check this one out:
//cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2925360154&category=30009

cut and paste the link - it's a package deal that includes lenses etc. I've bought from this guy, and another one in NYC called 47stphoto and had very good luck. can't beat the prices, and if you do your homework with respect to shipping/taxes etc, virtually no risk.

go for it - it's a great camera.

The remote shutter release cost about 100$.

I bought a Harbortronics Digisnap 2000 for my CP 990. It interfaces with your PC through a serial connection. It is great for doing long exposures and time lapse photography with the 990. I donĂ¢€™t know if it works with the 5700 or not but I am pretty sure they make one that will. I think I paid $130 for it but it is much better than the plain cable release.

It is definitely worth a look,

Off the subject of long exposures, but thought this is better than starting another 5700 thread.
I just updated my firmware from 1.0 to 1.1 on the 5700. It is now having a VERY hard time autofocusing. It did not seem to do this with the previous version. OUtside is fine, just indoors (worked before), it seems to not lock in. I keep getting the blinking green AF when shutter is under 1/15. Anyone had this problem after updating?

i actually find mine has a bit of trouble focusing in lower light anyway, and hoped the firmware would improve it. i'm glad you said something before i did it. please keep us posted about what you learn(I assume you've posed the question at //www.nikon.com?).
methinks i'll wait to 'upgrade'...

I have emailed Nikon, but no response yet. It does seem that the focus confirmation is easier to see, but is of no help for me...is hard to distinguish sometimes what it is actually "confirming" is in focus, unless in bright light. Anyway....waiting for that email.
