I've been tracking several lenses on ebay, and a few of them admit to dust being in the lens, but yet say it's common and doesn't affect the image. Is it really that common to have dust in the lens?

Yes from what I understand lens will get dust inside. The dust inside does not show up in pics. This is what I have read in other post.

Yes, it's common with most lenses. Canon L lenses are sealed, but typical zoom lenses pump air (and dust) in and out as you use them. A few specks won't have any affect on image quality because they're too defocused to be seen and too small to block any appreciable light.

Hey PhotoRyno and scalvert. Thanks for the info. Maybe I won't be so hesitant if I see a good deal than.

Just be careful about what someone means when they say "just a few specks". Ask them to be very specific.

I once bought a lens that was advertised as having "clean optics". When I got the lens it looked like someone had rubbed the front element with emory cloth. I contacted the seller who replied "Well the glass wasn't dirty was it?" He refunded me $150 on a $400 purchase.
