Not bad for the first time and for being stuck behind the fence. You need to fix the colors, all the pictures seem to have a yellowish tint to them and are a bit under exposed, Photoshop should be able to fix it though.

The pictures of the older red car is the perfect example of why a step ladder is used by photographers as "pixieland" mentioned. The step ladder gives just enough elevation when shooting across the track so that the signage between lanes does not cut off the bottom of the tires.

As far as GeneralE comments, The cars that have racing slicks will do burnouts to heat up the tires, the heat makes the tires sticky and hence better traction. Wheelies are common in drag racing and they show maximum traction between tires and drag surface. Now they aren't doing wheel stands of course, we are talking only inches normally.

Yeah, I saw the stepladders...they often got in the way of my shots.

I'm pretty sure that if I was in there I could have gotten shots that were at least on par with the guys that this track hires for photos.

As for toning, yeah...it's a 3 am toning job and I did those photos real quick just to post them here.

Anyway, I guess I'll prepare an email for the GM of the track and see what happens...

Where can I go from here (if anywhere)?

For a big event like this, the track had photo coverage and they most likely would not be interested in your shots. BUT... you could send them pics and ask about shooting their local racers on Saturday night (or whenever they race). Which would be a good way for you develop a relationship with the track.

Do not put a copyright watermark on your images. Think of it as an Open Challenge here on DPC. Don't add text, no spot editing. You can only adjust colors, curves, contrast/brightness, etc. I would enter your copyright info in the IPTC fields, but again, not to the image itself.

Okay, here are the twelve I'm sending him. I've done some retoning to brighten them up and reduce the yellow cast...let me know your thoughts:

Hey Mike looks like you are on the right track, pardon the pun. If you can go and speek to the GM of the track face to face it would be better than an e-mail. Maybe print out some of your shots and give them to him as well as a CD. DO NOT watermark the pics. Offer to cover some of the lesser events such as mid week and non pro meets, a good way of getting your face known to track staff. These events are often ignored by some of the track phots and are a lot slower than the pro events alowing more time to hone your skills. They are also a better option for selling your work as not many of these guys get a lot of coverage by the track phots and are hungry for good pics of themselves. The track I shoot at do not allow step ladders and such, they are very anal about where you can stand to take photos. I send them a CD after every meeting I cover even though I am shooting for a newspaper and not for them (it's just good form to let them see what you are getting). Get to know the track phot if he\she lets you they can be pretty territorlial so don't take it to bad if they don't want to know you. Just keep at them (the track management) and show loads of enthusiasm. GOOD LUCK.

Hey, your camera took some beautiful photos, what does one of those cameras with lens cost these days. I saw a review from 2003 that priced it close to $900.00. I'd sure like to use it at the track to take pictures for my boyfriend of his 1996 Impala SS. Does it have video capability?
