Kurt Jones is a friend of a friend of mine.

He has some amazing stuff in his folio.

The shark pix alone has made him a TON of money.

they got a bit better as they cam out of the water but still had the sun in the worng place!!

I was using my Canon 100-300 4.5-5.6, which ends up being a 160-480mm.
And i still needed more reach, cause i was on the beach.
get the canon 400mm 5.6L, which is really a 640mm f/5.6 for you. If you wanted further, then a 1.4x converter will make you a 896mm f/5.6, which is outstanding for the price.

So yes, the Canon 400mm f/5.6L is my next buy, if you havn't noticed.

Then there are kite surfers (aka kite boarders, kite sailors). I was out yesterday and just about filled a gig card with these guys who had perfect winds and were having a ball. Hang time is pretty good for the experts, so it was actually quite easy to get some good shots.
. .
.

Some of them actually got to be playing for the camera. I set up the tripod close to the water and used the Bigma, of course.

Were these taken off candlestick?

awesome shots of the kite surfers!

i have another question though, might be sort of dumb but...what other practical uses does the 400 f5.6 have? it's too slow for indoor sports, too long for portraits and stuff. wildlife is probably right up it's alley, but is there anything else you guys can think of?

These came from 3rd Avenue in San Mateo, TechnoShroom. It's a favorite place for the kite and wind surfers this time of year. You probably know the area, but if not, Take the 3rd Avenue East exit from 101 - it turns into a blvd with a different name. Just after the left entrance to the golf driving range is another road that appears to lead to big gates. But at the gates, turn right and there you are in the parking lot and at the Bay. Ikitesurf.com will give you wind conditions, etc. (you have to register)

(Corrected " 3rd Street" to "Avenue" )

Hmmm, not familiar with 3rd Street. If you mean 3rd Ave then you could be talking about Coyote Point. I'll have to check it out. I haven't been out that way in a long time. When I go to check out the wind/kite surfers I usually go to Candlestick or Waddell Creek. The latter mostly because I like to make a day of it.

It is 3rd Avenue(rather than Street), 'Shroom, but a little south of the Coyote Point area. This shot is not particularly good but gives placement (San Mateo Bridge in background)

I want to go back and get that big bridge looming in the background with one of these athletes front and center...
Meanwhile, I did put focal lengths on each of the images posted previously. The kite surfers can get pretty close!

Very nice shots Alice. That bigma is an impressive lens. And thanks for including all the exposure data & focal length. I really appreciate that little bit of extra effort.

I have just had 2 weeks of windsurfing in Italy. I took a load of pictures there. Luckily on the lake a lot of the action is close to the shore.
Here I did a lot of experimenting with slow shutter speeds to try to show speed.
All shots taken with 17-85
This first one was at 1/20 sec, zooming at the same time.

This was at 1/40 sec

The next 3 were 1/20 sec
.

I also did shots at high speed, but don't have any available at the mo.

Last December, I spent a week in the sand on the North Shore of Oahu at two beaches - Waimea and Pipeline. It was my first time shooting surf; here's what I learned.
1. The Sigma 50-500 wasn't long enough at Waimea, maybe sufficent at Pipe. I believe that a minimum of 700mm would be more effective - I'm looking at either a Canon 100-400 with 2x TC or Tamron 200-500 with 1.4 TC instead of a prime because of the versitility.
2. At a minimum, use a monopod, ideally a solid tripod if you have a long telephoto on.
3. I shot with a Digital Rebel and it worked fine, but the 3 fps is limiting. The transfer of data can be slow also if you are shooting large jpeg and you don't have a fast memory card.

Hope that helps,
BP

Here are a few of my surfing photos...great fun, both to shoot and to do:

Kite surfing:

I have a 70-300mm with no special bells and whistles and it worked just great. The lighting is key, I found, so take the pictures in late afternoon or early morning if possible.

A few from my E-10 with 3x converter (420mm equiv f2.8)

With no space between them, looks sort of like a Triptych.
