I have only had my Fuji for 2 months. But I am already craving more. I wanted to give my current set up to singsunshine, and get a little better system for myself.

I basically have a total budget of $900. Now that budget would be for everything camera, lens or lenese, memory stick ect ect. Basically the only thing I really want is a lens in the 70-300mm range. Other then that I will get a specific macro or wide angle lens later.

I would like to get a Canon Rebel but I think it is a bit out of my price range. I found a Pentax *ist with a 1gig sd card,bag,2 sigma lens 70-300mm f4-5.6 28-80mm f3.5-5.6. All for $859.95 new on ebay.

I am probrably going to travel to a Ritzcamera and feel and check all the cameras out before I purchase. But would like to know anyones thoughts or concerns with this setup.

I basically will be taking photos of landscape and still life stuff.

I can guarantee that you couldn't go wrong with that Pentax deal my man.. not in the slightest.

Of course, you want to make sure that the Pentax isn't *just* an *ist.

Make sure it's an *ist D or *ist Ds ;)

Wow man.. That's a hell of a buy. With a $900 budget, I can't see how you could do better.. seriously.

BTW.. that 70-300mm is the same lens I have.. I'm extremely pleased with it.

That is what I was thinking. I am sure it is a nice camera and I am sure I would need a lower f lens down the road and maybe a higher one. But that would get me started. What I do not really understand about lenses, is macro. I figured a 17-50mm or so would be macro but both of the lenses in that auction were said to be macro so I just did not understand that. I have also heard of Tamaron...Tokina...lenses so I am not sure where Sigma ranks in their.

Sigma stands hand-in-hand with Tamron, pretty much. They are known to be a little lax on quality control, but are also known to replace a poor lens with another one fairly easily. Tokina also makes some fine lenses, but just not as many.. as far as I know.

The "macro" function is really a bit of a marketing ploy, to tell you the truth. It just allows a little greater focusing but doesn't offer *true* macro capability.. for that you'd need what is known as a "prime" macro lens (50mm, 100mm, 200mm). It can be a little confusing, but if you just keep your eyes open and read a few things online, you can learn quickly. The "macro" function on these two lenses basically just means that at a certain focal length, (200-300mm on the 70-300mm for instance), you can get an *extra* bit of focusing length in order to bring a close subject into focus, where it wouldn't be without that feature.

Nice comparison between the ones I was looking at getting.

Maybe helpful ?
