I am looking to start recording sound to supplement my photos. At first this will be interview type stuff but since I am making the jump to buy equipment, this will also lead into recording nature, etc.

As far as recording devices.
- Has to be portable so I can take into the field.
- Has to make very good to excellent quality recordings.

I kind of have my choices down to two units.
Sony Mini-Disc Recorder
Pros - cheap, small and light
Cons - Not a pro unit, maybe not suitable for nature recordings, transfer from MD to MP3/WAV/PCM file, not a lot of adjustments on line inputs

--- or ---

Marantz PMD660
Pros - Pro level unit, records to CF Cards which means no moving arts and easy to transfer files to computer, infinite choices of mics.
Cons - Expensive, there have been some known problems with early production units, have to buy a mic to use it, so there are additional costs (in board mics are crap)

Now if anyone has experience in this area, I would love to hear from you. Suggestions, commetns, etc...

To start, I'd actually look for one of those rough/tough portable tape decks reporters carry around. Pro-audio or music places should have them. I can't remember for sure, but I think the most popular model is either a TEAC or a Sony.

Go Mini-Disc. Mics are another story but you don't need to drop big money to get good sound.

I see many musicians recording great live stuff through Mini-Disc with inexpensive mics and it works like a charm. The quality is remarkable with perfect tonal range and is easily high end, CD quality.

In fact, I saw some world class music tonight, recorded on Mini-Disc that gets offered up to hardcore, jazz fusion fans (sound freaks), by the set, that sells without an issue on the internet.

FWIW, this is exactly what the guys who produce the This Week in Tech (TWiT) podcast use to record their show.
