Here are a couple pics I took last weekend. On a bright day with white water and dark shadows, what's the best way to avoid overexposing the water without underexposing the shadows, keeping in mind the speed of the subject? I managed to fix these ok with PS, but I want to get it right without relying too much on processing.

there is only so much dynamic range you have to work with. when working with action shots you have fewer options than with landscapes (where you can use grad filters).

Only suggestion is to shoot in RAW, and process twice - once for highs and once for lows.

or only go out on overcast days!
