I'm digging this Challenge and I have to congratulate the author of it's description "What does darkness mean to you? Show us with an image". It's clear and with just the right degree of ambiguity. I dare anybody to mangle this one with a thread.

I entered and already pulled this for two reasons

First it violated the basic editing rules which would be the second time that I forgot to check before entering (the other was in Triangles which was a self imposed DQ).

Second I'm looking for something gloomy and dark and I don't think the crowd would recognize the A minor chord played here (very sad dark sound) very bluesy. I also thought of calling it Cocaine Blues which is a pretty dark place to be but wasn't sure how a drug reference would fly. Anyway...I'm looking for an even darker place. Full Metal Gloom.

I was also thinking of staying away from Open Challenges because they seem to be more like Rugby matches...hooligans and all.

So I have my work cut out for me if I'm going to jump into the fray.

Ol Be Bock!!!

I don't know if that would say "darkness" to a lot of people, particularly if they didn't know how to play guitar. But it's a very nice shot.

neat idea, and one of my favourite guitar chords. my favourite songs from two of my favourite bands make great use of it ("something vague" by bright eyes and "behind the garage" by eric's trip)...

i don't think it would have scored well, but nice work!

I would highly recommend Dm instead ... much more depressing than Am, which is, after all, just a rearranged C chord.

Check out Neil Young's Requiem for the Rockets (Running Dry) -- possibly the world's most depressing song -- for an outstanding example of this genre; another is The Irish Ballad by Tom Lehrer.

You should check out "two-headed boy" or "oh comely" by Neutral Milk Hotel for some sweet Am action...Now that is depressing.

Personally I like Drop-D tuning...now that is some dark (angry) music. Am is just a little to folky for me now maybe if this was a plain ol E .

Seriously this is a very nice shot and if I ran across it in a Dark Challenge I would understand what that you were trying to convey the music and not the darkness of the shot. But around these parts I doubt that many would have got it even with the title you have chosen.

Great Shot...

Great shot and I can see emotionally what you were going for. Being a musician myself (especially of the baroque period) I would have to say D-minor would be a darker key. A-minor is dark yes, but has more of a yearning or the longing for a lost love... because we know that A major is the key of love.
If you like dark music check out the music of John Dowland (renaissance era c1500) particularily "In Darkness Let Me Dwell".
Even though we are all artists on this site, I'm honestly not sure how many people would have gotten the musical reference. Love your train of thought though!

This makes me so happy for two reasons. One, that a good amount of people understand what I was shooting for and second that I stayed one step ahead of the DPC voters by pulling it. HA!!!

I agree that a D minor is far more depressing than an Am but it was easier to hold the guitar while positioning an Am and still handle the remote clicker at the same time.

The Stones have a song called Sister Morphine that opens with an Am7 that is straight from the dark side. Sinister stuff.

Thanx for the input. The search continues.
