Turning semi-pro seems to be creeping up on you pretty quickly, Mark!
I can't speak from specific experience, but I think Bobster made a good point - keep it simple.
High ISO, f/2.8 with your 28-75, think slow, and you'll do great. Good luck, and I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Blimey, thats a long time to be at Uni, I thought my friend nick had been there a long time, he started with me in 97, did 3 yrs BA, 1 year masters then 2 as Student Union president, hes got nothing on you though...
What subject have you dedicated your life to?
I started in 97 doing a BA history and living at clyne castle, i returned for a masters in Comp Sci.
Ahhhh JCs, the smoking dog, the beach, what fond memories. |

your gonna bring f717 as back up? Dude doesn't your school paper give you a camera to use? Most do.
Don't freak out just have fun. They are aware they're sending someone new to cover the event too.
You should really check to see if they have equipment for you to use. My paper does and I usually use that, cuz hey less wear and tear on my own stuff. |

In addition, if you have the $100 available get a 50mm 1.8 - you will really appreciate it!

My brother did a really good series on a local band (The Clarks) a couple years ago for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. I believe he may have won some awards for this:

I've worked at my school paper for awhile and they also sent me on a trial shoot, so I know how you feel. Consider yourself lucky.. I had to shoot some old guy's funeral!
Keep in mind that the most important part of a newspaper photo is face.. If it's not sharp and they're not making an interesting expression, it probably won't run. Artistic photos like motion blur or silhouettes are cool, but typically most papers won't run them. Make sure you try lots of different angles. Don't just stay in one place and try to do all your shooting there. Make sure you get a lot of closeups in the crowd, preferably with two or three people in it. People want to see themselves and their friends in the paper, so the more faces you can get in there, the better. However, don't take any with the people looking in your camera, ever. EVER. And always always always get names, years, and major. If you don't, it won't run. A small notepad and pen will become your best friend at this job ;) Also, try and get photos of people facing both left and right.. You never know where the page designer is going to need a photo, and if you have good shots from all angles, you're more likely to get more stuff printed.
Good luck!! |

This is not directly related to shooting for a newspaper... but the brown trousers... yes...
I recently did a catering menu food photoshoot for the company I work for and I was a bit worried about how the pics were gonna turn out... but, as nervous as I was initially, I got over it quite quickly!
When I was taking the photos I was visualizing what I like when I look at food in magazines and in cookbooks and what draws me in to those photos. I just went with my gut feeling. I also knew what my company was looking for, but at the same time, I had huge creative freedom. After 12 hours of shooting and some 600 photos that I had to later go through everyone loved my work.
In regards to your concert, go and have fun. Trust your gut and trust your eye! Put yourself into the moment and capture everything whether you think it is worthy or not. Some of the best photos end up being the ones you least expected to like.
Good Luck! and Congratulations!
Cheers

For sure! My "live in concert" shot looked pretty crappy on my little screen, but after putting it on my pc and boosting some levels I really did wind up loving it. Oh yea, a segue, dont' delete any shots. It's tempting to say "that sucks" and hit the trash can symbol....but ya never know. |

Cheers for the support guys!
hey cbonsall! the smokin' dogs gone! Nick Bradley's a really cool guy I though he was going into proper politics now, I work in Nanotechnology BTW, its an awesome job.
I'm almost prepped, everything on charge, got a computer to dump shots on if/when i fill my memory cards up & got a monopod today only a cheapy one from jessops, but its got a detachable head so I think will really help with the live shots. As far as I̢۪m aware, they haven̢۪t got any equipment for me, maybe just as well as I̢۪d rather use stuff I'm used to...even if its only 2 weeks old! Taking "proper" photos of the bands I wasn̢۪t expecting! I've scouted about 8 areas around campus that I think will make cool locations, and try and fit them to the Genre of the band (if that makes sense). Positioning people is what worries me a tad, but in the last few hours I've look at 100's (nay thousands!) of band shots, so I'm hoping by a process of osmosis I'll just absorb it! Those pics AlansFreed posted were really cool, got a few pointers.
I've got a notebook, so I try not to forget too much. I'm trying to remember (and recognize!) all the band members names as well, thought it might be a tad embarrassing to shout "oi! you with the big nose...etc" to get their attention. Assuming I haven̢۪t turned into a gibbering wreck by the time its all over I'll post the best ones... and if it goes really bad... someone might get a bargain 350D!one careful owner... ;)
Cheers
