I need to tack this up somewhere!! My entries have been terrible!! I thought my two current ones were better, but currently, one is doing worse than my previous entries, and the other is doing only slightly better. A bit discouraging to say the least. But, I still enjoy it (just not that skilled at it).

I will still enter challenges but it will take a dramatic photo of mine to enter it. I don't really care if I win or not it is the comments I always look for. I know it sounds hypocritical but I just wanted to say dammit 8 - 1's

with that in mind one of my favoruite phots here and I hope jmsetzler doesn't mind but his received 7 - 1's it just goes to show that there are trolls everywhere and I just need to learn how to ignore them.

Why do you call them "trolls"? Can't you just accept that in this International community we have there are going to be a LOT of different aesthetics at involved, and let it go? Using the example of Setzler's picture, perhaps some of our members just plain were expressing their dislike of America with their 1's? Is that so bad? People are expressing their personal biases all the time in their voting here, myself included. It's just that occasionally it's a little more obvious to the naked eye.

To allow oneself to get angry and upset over negative votes is simply pointless in my opinion. And I say this as someone who started out that way, and changed. Oh, I was OFFENDED by the scores I got at first. I was furious. But I had to do a reality check. I mean, I can't even get my NEIGHBORS to agree on the relative merits of my potential entries, why should the voters agree?

A reply to many posts here...

My Construction shot is getting pounded (4.6). There is (in my mind anyway) no reason for to be this low. Technically excellent, colorful, on -topic, shows compositional skills. I tried several titles, and perhaps did not pick the best one, but that goes to the useing a title to fit a pic to the challenge, or (as rex did) use it to explain to those not familiar with the 'subject', and well, 3 comments. One from a non-US person sees no construction. Perhaps my entry is too ethno-centric (culturally centric?). I know US Flags get low votes for that reason (or similar less PC reasons) as Seltzers photo demonstrates.

I am not at all happy about my low score for 'no reason', but not much i can do about it, except take solace that my Framed entry is above expectations (rare for one of my entries to exceed expectations!)

As for voting methodology...Every pic starts at 5. If it is too snap shotty or has a tech flaw or major compositional oops, then it gest a 4. If it excells in some area then it gets a 6. An off-challenge shot gets scored in the 1-5 range, most getting 3 or 4. To get a 7+ from me the photo has to show some originality (so when i see 5 pics of goats or boats or lips or whatever, all will score less than if it was the only one of such subject), difficulty in getting the shot is worth something, although that can be tough to tell at times. I'd like to punish those that use sunsets/puppies/flowers so often, but hey, if the pic is really nice I can't do that.

As to comments..sorry, i don't do the back patting ones (NICE!, etc). If I give it a 3 or less, i always comment on why. I'd love to comment more on the 4,5,6 ones, but so many times there is nothing wrong with the submitted image, it just doesn't 'do it'. Like all time favorite cars lists - Corvettes, Porsches Ferraris are at the top, Taurus', Cavaliers and Buicks are not, even though they are good cars and most of us drive one.

Prof,

Back to the baseball, kind of, my decision score was 3.6 the first morning when I woke up and checked. 3.6! It was a baseball shot and I knew that poeple outside of the US might not understand it and people who don't watch baseball wouldn't understand it, But I didn't believe it deserved a 3.6! Over the course of the week it slowly rose all the way to 5.something. Not where I thought when I first submitted, but at a place in the challenge I think it deserved.

The first night of voting seems to be brutal lately. and it seems others who have images scoring low have knee jerk reactions and start voting low. By Saturday the score should be up. Good luck in the challenge! I skipped this one after the last 3 - I need a breather from the stress!

dahkota -
thanks, i'll try and take solace in what you say and hope for the best. My Framed started at 6.22 and and steadily dropped for 24 hours. Construction is holding, after starting at 4.9 or so. I had a bad run, and lately it has been picking up so naturally i expect all my entries to do well...

IF i can get something for birds, great. Darkness is doubtful, mainly becuase i have no clue what would be on-topic or not, from the voters standpoint, so why subject myself to the 'punishment'.

First, I ask myself, Does it fit with the theme? I shouldn't have to figure it out either. It should jump at me. Then I rate on the quality, that is so important I think. I NEVER vote a picture bad on my own personal opinion. If I love the entry, I sometimes comment that I do, but it had nothing to do with my vote.

I'm the opposite - I vote primarily based on my personal opinion. If the photograph makes me want to look away, It'll get a 1-3 score, period.

I dont worry about the challenge theme too much - I dont care if someone uses the title, or is very loosely related. As long as I can find some connection to the challenge topic, I rate it on photographic quality alone. If I cant figure out the relevance to the topic, I'll deduct a point or two, That's all. Technically weak, on-challenge photographs do nothing for me, and get a 4-5 score.

I think that it is interesting to see who has responded to this thread, and what they give for an average score. Most have an average score GIVEN of 4.8 through 5.7 - Which kinda shows a "bell curve" in voting styles. What concerns me are the average votes of 3.8255 and 4.1770 by two of the posters. Are the pictures submitted to this site so bad? Why do people then take the time to take and post pictures to this site?????

Another education is looking at the "top" photographer average scores given on this site. a FEW think everyone else's photos are horrible based on their average score given.

Just my two cents.
