Originally posted by ladymonarda: This challenge does not necessarily mean that the photo has to be of darkness. Does this mean it has to be a dark photo? As in, what if darkness is a liberating state for someone, then it would not be dark as we perceive it, but light as in it provides comfort and security. Anyone see what I am getting at here? Would a photo with a concept like this tank do you think?

You are right! I was only thinking of nighttime. Duh!!! |

This is one of those problem Challenges where the description can be read almost as an open challenge but the title makes it sound far from open.
If you don't have darkness in your photo, you will get knocked for not meeting the challenge. If your photo doesn't explain/show what darkness means to you, you will get knocked for not meeting the challenge. I guess the key will be to do both and make everyone happy.

It's all up to interpretation. 'Darkness' doesn't necesarrily have to mean 'negative' or 'damaging'. |

This is the avenue I am lost on. I need a map. I don't even know what city I am in anymore. Anyone got a light? I am lost in the dark here and can't find my way and I jsut ran out of matches.

Is this a 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile or full mile track?

I was scrolling thru the various threads on the 'Darkness' challenge. Curious to see where my views fit with the many that have posted. I think what Steve (pawdrix) has to say here was right on for the concept of this challenge.
And no, not the flowers comment - although that is interesting. ;^) It was this statement that I am glad to see posted:
"I see it as a quest for metaphorical darkness. Not the opposite of Light On White per se. I believe the key word in the description is the word "mean". There's the obvious lack of light darkness, which is just.....well, ....darkness. That alone of course can be very powerful but the word "mean" opens up some very interesting avenues."

Dead flowers...?

Again I think a plain old shot of darkness is fine, if that's what darkness means to you. There are some very cheery people on this site unlike me who lurches in the underbelly of the night. Plenty for me to shoot. |

Great poem Kavey, I think it works well for the 'absence' side description of this challenge. My submission captures several particular absences which are important to me, as well as some presences. So many possibilities in this challenge, I think it'll be very interesting to see the submissions, I'm pretty excited about it!

Interesting observation, however, I think the description is pretty clear and does not conflict with the title. The photo shouldn't need 'Darkness', as in absense of light, to do well. Trying to appease both camps on this one will certainly land you in average results land.

If you don't have darkness in your photo, you will get knocked for not meeting the challenge. If your photo doesn't explain/show what darkness means to you, you will get knocked for not meeting the challenge. I guess the key will be to do both and make everyone happy. |

Shoot - I'm starting to confuse myself! ;^)
I was just trying to get this thread going again and it kept getting interrupted by some other thread advertisements. No biggee, maybe I'll figure some way to incorporate this into my 'Darkness' challenge...image of thread hijackers looming in the background. He-he.

Am I the thread hi-jacker? :o( I thought my poem was relevant to discussion on interpretations...
