Good L-Primes will always be better and sharper than zooms, but you don't have the flexibility of a zoom. The Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L is as good as it gets, one of the BEST zooms available on the market today. |

It depends on what you're shooting...
For indoor sports f/1.8 primes may be more convenient (which is what I use my 50/1.8 and 85/1.8 for).
For more general use where you can get away with f/2.8 and above, the 24-70 may be more convenient.

The 24mm is not supposed to be amazing wide open but stopped down it's good. The 85mm is going to blow away the zoom lens however. It's major downside is the CA that it is plagued with. Remember that you can get 3-4 lenses for the price of the zoom.

What 85mm are we talking about, the 1.2 or 1.8? I've not experienced any CA with my 1.8.

From what i've heard it's the #1 or #2 worst lens in the canon lineup for CA. Maybe you got a great copy!

So what would you do.... I don't mind changing lenses. But I do like the Zoom ease of use. I want to walk around with a super sharp wide and medium telephoto.
What lenses would you get? |

Do you have any references? I read a lot of reviews before I bought my 85, and I don't seem to remember anyone complaining. Maybe your source had a bad one?
Edit: Also, PhotoDo puts the 85/1.8 alongside the 200/2.8 fixed in terms of glass quality, and better than a LOT of other primes. I'd be very surprised if such a high quality lens had CA issues.

Looking for a good value in a fast lens? Try the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens.
The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens is relatively inexpensive but yields very good image quality. Contrast and saturation are very good.

Those are the first two paragraphs of the review for the 1.8 85mm lens from this review site, that has LOTS of lens reviews

I have seen a number of different examples over at FM which had bad CA. From discussion over there it seems to be very common. Don't get me wrong, I think the 85 1.8 is a great lens for the money, but that's the only problem with it. CA happens on a lot of lenses with my 80-200L included. I'm not trying to discourage this lens, just trying to make the buyers aware of known issues. I will try to find some examples... Maybe after lunch
