Good thread, Neil. If I'da got in before your decision, I would only have added NEVER got one that has the paper standing up - I don't know if they make those anymore - HP made some awhile back (6L, I think). Jam, jam, jam. They sucked.
I have had a HP4P ($900 new) for longer than I can remember and it prints slow, but has served well. I also have a Minolta QMS PagePro 1100 that I got a pretty good deal on at the time and am pretty happy with it.
Good luck with the new HP - looks solid.

Hp LaserJet Series 4si - is what I'm using for my primary and have serveral other for backup purposes. Your problem sound like the rubber roller in the front is gone as they DO wear out. Probably only $20-$40 to replace. Might be advisable to get it serviced instead or bring it to me and I'll do it. I probably even have to part kickin around.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I looked at it more carefully last night, and even put in the last toner cartridge (I had just changed it out, and used a verbatim cartridge for the first time) to see if that could have anything to do with it. But it didn't.
It makes a screaming sound when it tries to feed from the paper tray. The sheet feed mechanism grabs the paper, but then the screaming begins. I would say screeching, but it's a little lower pitched than that.
I kind of thought it sounded like a motor/clutch mechanism sound that was stuck (which is why I looked at the cartridge), though I admit total ignorance as to how the printer path/motors work!

Its not the motor and it IS the rubber rollers. Try using alcohol and cleaning them or better yet replacing them. They are really cheap and easy to do. Even servicing should only cost you $70 at the most with parts if you don't want to do it yourself.
The "screaching" sound is caused by the paper feeder not being able to grip the paper with could be cause by smoking, dust, dirt etc. I've had to do this with mine and is relatively easy.

Just a quick nap so you could see what I was talking about.

Thanks very much for your help.
I can see some white rollers underneath the big black one. I've tried to clean them, but they are pretty inaccessible.
After playing with it a bit, I can now more characterize the noise as a "buzz", just like the sound a old fashion electric toy buzzer makes. Even without paper in it, it reports "paper jam" on the display. (Well, first it reports Load Letter, but then after trying to print, the ubiquitous paper jam comes up.
The problem is that there isn't very good access to the roller area. There are lots of screws, but without a manual, I am not sure what to take apart! I'll post a pic in a minute in this message.
This is the main roller I can see:
In this next shot, you can see some whiteish rollers which sit just above the black one. How do I get to this to change them?

ok I'm trying to flip between images to get a better understanding but Its very hard to see without being there. From what I can see the white roller is you paper feed from your tray to the printer. Then the black roller should feed it into the printer. Its very hard to tell from the pic provided but seriously it's not going to be very expensive. Worse case scenerio drive here and I can do it for you. oh yea I left comments on photos. lol I will phone around for a price and see whats what to give you some better ideas. brb

In the two pics I posted, the printer is standing on its side/back; we are looking from the bottom of the printer, sort of "up", from the paper tray
s perspective, which is removed. The top of the picture is the "front" of the printer. The black roller feeds the paper from the tray. To the right top of the black roller, you can see some much smaller white rollers (at least one, but I think there's a grouping of two or three which appear to be similar to your case.)
I cleaned the black roller and what I could reach of the white roller (which also gets cleaned indirectly when I clean the black roller and vice versa) with alcohol, but it doesn't help. I am wondering even if there's a small fragment of a page "stuck" in there somewhere (the last thing the printer did here was jam). But looking where "I" have access, you can't see anything.
The printer is 11 years old, and I might play with it some more, but since I already spent too much time specing out, pricing and buying a new one, I am about ready to accept defeat. If I can get this working though, it might still be handy to have a second printer, if for nothing else to donate it to a worthy cause. It does have a brand new $65 toner cartridge in it!
I am going to look for a service manual online, or at least some instructions.
I do appreciate your kind offer to help. Your profile doesn't say where you are located though! I am guessing Toronto? GTA = Greater Toronto Area? That's a 6.5 hour drive from here! |

screach:
Rollers
Bearings and/or clutch
Fingers
Toner.
The fingers are near the fuser and if its not the fingers and it turns out to be the fuser then throw it out cuz it's not worth it. but all the rest is fairly easy and replacable. I need to know more of where the noise is coming from to tell you what it could be.
How far in does the paper go before it jams???
Is it getting stuck right before it enters the printer?(then its the paper feed roller)
Its similar to figuring out what wrong with your car except doing it over the net. lol
Might be worth a road trip to Toronto :D lol
